IT’S not all Frankie Dettori and Aidan O’Brien through the summer.
Jumps fans can still find some action to sink their teeth into, and the Summer Plate day at Market Rasen is often the highlight, even if it’s too hot for tweed.
2.10 Betway Summer Handicap Hurdle (Listed)
Run over an extended two miles, this is largely a test of speed over a sharp, undulating track.
Worth £40,000 it can be a race trainers will hold a few back for and all the usual faces – Dan Skelton, Olly Murphy and Dr Richard Newland – look to have done just that.
Main Danger – St Gallen
Olly Murphy’s flat convert is 2-2 since switching from Joseph O’Brien’s and still looks streaks ahead of the handicapper.
He’s only been chucked up 5lbs for a cosy win at Kempton and the booking of Dickie Johnson shows Murphy’s hand.
This is a different proposition all together, but I’m banking on his Flat experience to come into good use in the hustle and bustle of this competitive handicap.
Any market support will be music to my ears and racing off of 10’6 he looks a serious danger.
Big-price Chance – Legal History
David Pipe’s four-year-old improved no end last season and a wind-op could just see him find that upward curve once again.
It’s a race these unexposed sorts thrive in and he’s about as consistent as they come.
His hurdling is spot on and this speedy track will play to his strengths.

3.20 Betway Summer Plate Handicap Chase (Listed)
Time for the chasers next up, and it’s a similarly competitive heat, with a field of 15 vying for the £50k pot.
Plenty come into this off the back of good wins and in flying form and it makes it a tricky race to be over-confident on.
Main Danger – Ronava
This horse doesn’t fit the typical profile Dr Richard Newland tends to thrive with, but thrive he has done nonetheless.
He may be 11, but he’s found a new lease of life in the doctors care, winning his last two starts on differing ground and different trips.
The handicapper has given nothing away with a 12lbs rise since his Hexham romp – but he absolutely flew home that day and could have won by half the track if allowed.
He’s completely unexposed and off 10’13 looks the pick of the bunch.
Big-price chance – Solar Impulse
This Cheltenham Festival winner looks a big old price for the shrewd Ian Williams.
Arguably the best multi-discipline trainer in England, Williams knows how to ready one for a prize and this nine-year-old has been in good form without too much of a hard time from the handicapper.
The forecast will help things and likely hinder a good number of these. He looks over-priced at current odds.
