"Many Photos" - Longleat stately home is now selling souvenir notebooks... made from KOALA POO

The fine quality of the paper in a new range of souvenir notebooks on sale at Longleat will come as no surprise to visitors at the world-renowned stately home.

But what might shock them is a very unusual additive that contributes to the strength and richness of the pages: koala poo.

The Wiltshire estate, which has a famous safari park and is run by Viscount and Viscountess Weymouth, has launched two mementoes of its recently opened Koala Creek attraction.

Dung from the park’s four koalas has been transformed into bound A5 notebooks which cost £7, and square jotter pads, priced at £5.

The website description reads: ‘This notebook is crafted from 100 per cent recycled materials, including poo from Longleat’s very own koalas.’

A koala at Longleat

The paper is made at Frogmore Paper Mill in Hemel Hempstead – 115 miles from Longleat – which has been producing paper since 1774.

The process of making paper from waste materials involves removing all non-fibre materials such as dirt, mud and leaves from the dung. 

The fibres are then boiled for four to six hours which softens them and makes them more supple. 

The next step is to mix the resulting pulp fibres with non-wood fibre pulp material to make a stronger sheet of paper.
