"Many Photos" - Europe to bake in ANOTHER 40C heatwave next week after record-breaking June scorcher

EUROPE is set to bake in another extreme heatwave next week with forecasters warning temperatures could climb higher than 40C again.

After a brief respite from the scorching heatwave that gripped Europe last month, predictions show that another spell of dangerously hot weather could be on the way.

France, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Austria, Norway and the Netherlands are all at risk of being engulfed by the second heatwave.

A worrying map showing a huge black spot of heat over France and Spain next week has been shared by MetDesk’s WX Charts company.

“Potentially more record breaking heat in Western Europe next week,” the caption reads.

The data company later added: “We could be looking at another round of extreme European heat next week.

“One to watch for now, but the signal [for a heatwave] is there.”

Météo France, the country’s national weather agency, also warned Europe could be heading towards a second heatwave, but that forecasts were not yet definitive.

The agency said it would continue to monitor weather changes and patterns, which are constantly evolving, over the coming days.

Météo France expects the mercury will start to climb this weekend in France, with most areas hitting 35C by next Tuesday.

Wednesday and Thursday will likely see peak temperatures reach as high as 39C-40C in the south-east and 35C in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the agency warned.

It comes weeks after France recorded its all-time highest temperature of 45.9C.

The temperature in Gallargues-le-Montueux in the Gard département hit 45.9C at 4.20pm on Friday June 28.

The previous 2003 record of 44.1C was beaten twice before on the same Frida.

“This is historic,” a Météo-France meteorologist, Etienne Kapikian, said.

“It’s the first time a temperature in excess of 45C has ever been recorded in France.”

Hundreds of firefighters battled to contain wildfires raging in southern France as the temperatures soared last month.

Scores of fires razed 600 hectares (1,500 acres), destroying several homes and vehicles in the Gard region.

Authorities in Paris set up “cool rooms” in municipal buildings, opened pools for late-night swimming and installed extra drinking fountains.

The World Meteorological Organisation said that 2019 is on track to be among the world’s hottest years and 2015-2019 would be the hottest five-year period on record.

It said the European heatwave was “absolutely consistent” with extremes linked to the impact of greenhouse gas emissions.

Germany, France, Poland and the Czech Republic all also recorded their highest-ever June temperatures.

In Spain, firefighters battled Catalonia’s worst wildfires in 20 years.

Blazes also broke out in Greece and Germany.

After the record-breaking June temperatures, scientists have warned July is likely to be no different.

“June was the hottest June on record and July is now shaping up to be the hottest July on record,” Michael Mann, Climate Scientist, Professor & Director of the Penn State ESSC, told Euronews.

“Since July is the warmest month globally, if we break the all-time July record that will actually be the all-time warmest month on record,” he added.

Simon Cardy, a meteorologist specialising in weather impacts for the energy industry, also said high temperatures and dry weather are on the cards for next week.

Heatwaves occur across northern Europe when high atmospheric pressure draws up hot air from northern Africa, Portugal and Spain, raising temperatures and increasing humidity.
