PERFECTING a classic smokey eye or Hollywood wing is a skill most of us still haven’t fully mastered.
However, pick the best eyeliners and your makeup session can go smoothly (yes, really)…expert or not, we’re nothing without the right tools.
While it’s easy to think of eyeliner as a classic black pencil, they have come a long way over the past few years and aren’t just used for definition.
There are coloured pencils available which add a touch of vibrancy to a bold eye look, white and nude kohls that will brighten eyes and banish hints of a hangover, and even bright white liquid eyeliners which work amazingly to open up the eyes, making them seem bigger.
What type of eyeliner is easiest to apply?
If you’re looking for an eyeliner that you can apply in a hurry, go for a kohl pencil.
You need very little pressure and it’s easy to build the thickness of the line up, and smudge it out where needed.
Liquid and gel eyeliners with thicker tips are also easy to apply when compared to the more precise, fine tip versions.
However, if you want the perfect cat-eye, you’ll need a precision tool or tip and a steady hand.
Alternatively, buy a product such as The QuickFlick – it’s fantastic.
Which is better – pencil or liquid eyeliner?
Choosing between pencil or liquid liners when on the hunt for the best eyeliner depends on the look you’re going for.
Pencils are better for smoked out, blendable looks and can be used both on the lid and in the waterline.
Pencil eyeliner tends to be more long wearing than a liquid or gel formula.
Liquid eyeliner is great for a precise and perfect cat-eye flick, but there are different formulas and applicators which will all give you a different end result.
These range from an eyeliner with a super fine tip, to a budge-proof gel liner applied with a brush.
1. Best eyeliner for a perfect cat eye
- Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, £17 from Debenhams – buy here
If you’re sick of your eyeliner flicks going a bit haywire due to the applicator being a little too thick or bulky, Kat Von D’s Tattoo liner will transform the game.
The ultra-fine nib is made up of hundreds of tiny hairs that come to a narrow end and the ink is highly packed with pigment, so you don’t need to layer in order to get that perfect matte black.
Tattoo Liner comes in two colours, Mad Max Brown and Trooper (the darkest black imaginable).
The brand has won awards for its super long-wearing formula, so you can be sure your hard-earned cat eye won’t be wiped into oblivion by the end of the day.
2. Best eyeliner for a pop of colour
- Urban Decay 24/7 Glide On Eye Pencil, £16 from Escentual – buy here
Looking for an easy to apply way to freshen up your everyday makeup look? Urban Decay’s daring eyeliners could solve all of your problems.
For only £16 you can take your pick from the extensive colour range. From bright purple to neon green, every colour of the rainbow seems to be in the collection.
The 24/7 promise means the eyeliner is smudge-proof and budge-proof meaning you don’t need to top up the product and the creamy, moisturising formula means you can even blend the product over your lid for a simple colour smoke. Two uses in one? This eyeliner deserves a slot in your makeup bag.
3. Best eyeliner for a Royal smoke
- Eye Kohl in Teddy, £15 from MAC Cosmetics – buy here
The Teddy eye pencil from MAC Cosmetics is a warm, bronzed brown and has a more traditional chalky consistency, making it perfect for a neutral smokey eye.
The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle has cited the Eye Kohl as her favourite eye pencil and it has sold out a number of times as a result. If it’s good enough for royalty it’s good enough for us.
At only £15 it’s pretty affordable and comes in a small range of colours, from white to gold, green and purple.
We recommend going with Meghan’s shade of choice (Teddy) and pairing it with warm-toned eyeshadows and lashings of black mascara for a mysterious eye look.
4. Best eyeliner for tired eyes
- Rock ‘n’ Kohl Eye Cheat, £19 from Charlotte Tilbury – buy here
Charlotte Tilbury has secured her name as beauty royalty and this is all down to her incredible skills and her range of beauty products that seem to do the unimaginable.
Say, for instance, her Eye Cheat liner – which literally banishes any sign of a hangover or lack of sleep.
It gives the illusion of a great night’s sleep with a simple nude pencil.
The ultra-creamy consistency makes it perfect for the waterline as it doesn’t tug on tired eyes. It blends nicely too.
5. Best gel liner
- Milk Makeup Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner, £19 from Cult Beauty – buy here
American brand Milk Makeup recently launched in the UK and its products are already flying off the shelves.
The Long Wear Gel Eyeliner comes with a wind-up pencil on one end and a handy smudging tool on the other, which will help blend out the creamy formula.
Unlike most eyeliner pencils there’s no need to sharpen this one, just twist and go, which makes it really handy for travel.
The best bit? It’s available in all the basic shades and some crazy ones like ‘Holographic’.
6. Best eyeliner on a budget
- NYX White Liquid Liner, £7 from Cult Beauty – buy here
A white eyeliner might seem like a bold move but it’s a product you’ll find many uses for if you enjoy experimenting with makeup.
For only £7 you’ll brighten up your eye looks. Apply it in the inner corner of your eyes to really draw attention to your peepers or trace a black cat eye to make it pop.
You can even use a white liner for lip contouring.
Budding makeup artists, you’ll love the ultra fine brush. Not only does it enable precision for tracing your lash line, but it can also be used to draw tiny illustrations and patterns on the face.
