MANCHESTER UNITED fans booed Ashley Young during their pre-season clash with Inter Milan – despite the Englishman being favourite to be named new club captain.
The 34-year-old replaced new signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka on 63 minutes in Singapore, but supporters were disappointed with the change.
After Young’s name was called out it was followed by a chorus of boos by United fans, who also jeered his every touch.
Despite the unwelcomed reception from his fans, the former England star is in the running to take over Old Trafford captaincy next season.
After skipper Antonio Valencia left Manchester at the end of last season on a free transfer, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer must decide on who will take over the armband.
Wantaway Paul Pogba is also a shock candidate for the role, despite the player’s agent revealing the midfielder wants to leave Old Trafford.
Young featured 39 times for the Reds last season, primarily at full-back, filling in as vice-captain.
With Wan-Bissaka signed for £50million from Crystal Palace, and left-back Luke Shaw becoming a regular, Young’s future remains uncertain.
The former Aston Villa man did set up United’s winner against Inter after his free-kick was finished by Mason Greenwood.
Striker Romelu Lukaku did not feature in the game, with the opposition still thrashing out a deal to sign the Belgian.
Antonio Conte has expressed his desire to bring the 26-year-old to the San Siro this summer but their latest offer of £54m was thought to have been rebuffed.
After rejecting the offer of a two-year loan, the Old Trafford club are sticking to their £75m valuation of the striker.
And the slow transfer talks are frustrating new Inter boss Conte, who tried to sign Lukaku for Chelsea two years ago.
Conte said: “I think frustrated is a big word. He is a United player. That is the reality.

“I consider him an important player for us to have a good improvement. At the same time, there is a market, we know very well our situation.”
Inter striker Icardi was sent home from the club’s pre-season training camp amid speculation he wants to join Juventus.
