WWE legend Kurt Angle is celebrating being nearly six years clean as he prepares for his retirement match.
The 50-year-old will call time on his illustrious career on April 7 when he battles Baron Corbin at WrestleMania 35.
ADDICTION PROBLEMS
The Olympic Gold Medallist has defeated all before him since he debuted in professional wrestling 21 years ago.
But one opponent Angle struggled to beat was drug addiction.
After undergoing neck surgery in 2003, the legend began taking the pain-killer Vicodin, later revealing he was consuming 65 pills a day at the height of his addiction.
The veteran also suffered problems with alcohol and he had four DUI’s within a five-year period.
But Angle decided to face his problems head on and entered rehab in 2013.
And now nearly six years on, as he gets set to climb in to the ring for the final time as an active wrestler, he has thanked his legion of fans for their support.
GIVING THANKS
In a post on his Facebook page, the now clean and sober American wrote: “Wrestlemania is around the corner. My very last match.
“I know its not the old Kurt Angle everyone has wanted, but im proud knowing its the new Kurt Angle thats been clean for almost 6 years.
“Thank you to all those who have been supporting me through the good and bad. I love you all.”
LEGACY
Away from wrestling Angle is also trying to help others with their addictions.
He launched the Anglestrong initiative several years for addicts in recovery, including a website and app.
After it’s creation, Angle told The Fix: “It was easy to stay clean when I was in rehab because there was so much structure and you’re taking care of yourself.
“But when you get out, it’s gone and nobody is checking on you. That’s why so many people relapse.
“I’m travelling all the time for work and I’m a husband and father to five kids, so I just don’t have time for AA meetings.
“I could go to a counsellor or a psychiatrist, but that’s pricey and still just one day a week. Where was I going to get this structure now?

“That’s why I launched the Anglestrong initiative. There’s a website, anglestrong.com, and then the app.
“We’re going to start offering workouts, diet tips, positive daily messages, video chats, helping people with career goals.
“We want to give addicts the structure they need to hold themselves accountable and follow some kind of program.”
