Remote, rural Norway provided the backdrop as work on Daniel Craig's long-awaited swan-song as James Bond got underway on Thursday.
While Craig was not present, a mysterious, theatrically masked gunman was seen stumbling in pursuit of a terrified young girl as she fled across the ice.
Cameramen tracked the pair during what appeared to be a dramatic scene, filmed in a large clearing surrounded by pine trees in Nittedal, just north of capital city Oslo.
Here we go: A mysterious, masked gunman was seen on set as filming for the 25th installment in the James Bond franchise got underway in Norway on Thursday
At one point the gunman appeared to lie in wait for the young girl, who obviously stood outside a large wood-panelled property while he crouched nearby.
With Spring temperatures rising to an average eight degrees across northern Norway, the production team were seen sprayed artificial snow across the large area during a short break between takes.
The sequence represents the first Bond action in four years, although little is known about the scene and its relation to plot developments in what will be the long-running film franchise's 25th installment.
However social media fan sites claim the scene is a flashback, with the young actress playing a teenage Madeline Swann, Bond's love interest in 2015 release Spectre.
Quit on set: Members of the production team were seen readying the surrounding area as what appeared to be a chase scene got underway
Involved: A young girl joined the gunman, with social media footage tracking him as he chases her across the ice
Chilly: The girl sported a colourful winter jacket as she huddled on the ice between takes with the gunman, who covered his features with the theatrical looking mask
Waiting game: The pair idled on the ice during a break between scenes in Norway
Get ready: Crew members surrounded the pair as they prepared to film their sequence
If so, the scene would suggest Craig's yet to be titled fifth film as the secret agent will adopt a non-linear narrative, a departure from the more conventional mode of storytelling used by the franchise.
Bond was last seen driving into the sunset with sultry psychologist Swann, played by French actress Léa Seydoux, after apprehending perennial nemesis Ernst Stavro Blofeld.
The film, which divided critics, delved into his past as he traced the origins of a mysterious ring, only to discover it belongs to a global terrorist organisation led by childhood friend Franz Oberhauser - the son of Bond's legal guardian.
Originally thought dead, Oberhauser, played by Christoph Waltz, had instead masterminded the criminal group under the alias of Blofeld - his mother's maiden name - with the objective of killing Bond.
Let's talk: The actor chatted to one of the production team while cradling his machine gun beneath an arm
Unmasked: Oscar-winner Rami Malek is rumoured to be playing Bond's adversary, but little is known about the actor seen on set on Thursday
Realistic: With Spring temperatures rising to an average eight degrees across northern Norway, the production team sprayed artificial snow across the large area
Seydoux's reprisal of Swann was confirmed by Bond 25 director Cary Joji Fukunaga in December, along with the return of British stars Ralph Fiennes, Ben Whishaw and Naomie Harris.
The director praised the Bond Brit pack — and British thespians in general — noting that he has worked with many on past projects, including Beasts Of No Nation and Jane Eyre.
'You have some of the best actors in the world here,' he told the Daily Mail. 'Why wouldn't I have the best coming back?!'
Let's talk: The actor passed the time while waiting cameras to roll on the Norwegian set
Busy: Various locations in Jamaica, where Bond creator Ian Fleming once lived, and the Italian province of Matera will also be used as filming continues throughout 2019
Coming soon: Bond 25 is expected to go on general release on 8 April 2020
Oscar-winner Rami Malek is widely thought to be playing Bond's latest enemy, although he was not seen during principal photography this week.
Various locations in Jamaica, where Bond creator Ian Fleming once lived, and the Italian province of Matera will also be used as filming continues throughout 2019.
Bond 25 is expected to go on general release on 8 April 2020.
Watch out: The gunman appeared to be lying in wait as the young girl obliviously idled close to large, wood-paneled property
Unwelcome visitor: With his mask in place, the mysterious character looked like a terrifying home invader as he stood outside the home
Job done: The actor pulled on a thick winter coat after filming his first scenes
Hard at work: Meanwhile the production team assembled camera equipment in the wooded area
Farewell: The film will be Daniel Craig's last as James Bond, and his fifth in total, although he is yet to film his first scenes
