"Many Photos" - Mike Phelan set to stay on as Man Utd assistant boss after Solskjaer handed full-time role on three year deal

MIKE PHELAN is set to stay as on Manchester United assistant manager after the club confirmed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as permanent boss.

Phelan, 56, was Sir Alex Ferguson’s right-hand man during his all-conquering reign at Old Trafford.

And he has been credited with being an “important” part of the side’s turnaround in results since Solskjaer replaced Jose Mourinho.

Solskjaer’s appointment on a three-year deal was made official today and it is believed Phelan’s will soon be as well, say the Manchester Evening News.

However, club chiefs are delaying it for a short while because they want to make today “Ole’s day”.

Phelan, who spent six months in charge of Hull City from July 2016, is still contracted to Australian Central Gold Coast Mariners as their sporting director.

‘EVERYTHING I WANT’

United would therefore have to agree a compensation package with the A-League side to sign the Lancashire-born coach on a new deal.

Phelan spent 12 years as a first-team coach under Fergie. Five of them were as his assistant between 2008-13.

Solskjaer, whose appointment Phelan tweeted out, has praised the Old Trafford stalwart in the past – and originally brought him in to provide more experience alongside first-team coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna.

He said in January: “Mick’s absolutely brilliant, with his experience, his knowledge and personality around the place.
