"Many Photos" - Women’s 800m champ Semenya arrives at court to challenge IAAF ‘breaking her human rights’ for forcing her to take testosterone-suppressing drugs

ATHLETICS star Caster Semenya has arrived at the Court of Arbitration for Sport as she looks to fight plans that would force her to take testosterone-suppressing drugs.

The South African government have claimed that the proposed rule change by the IAAF target the 28-year-old specifically.

While they have also said that it is as “gross violation of her human rights” ahead of the landmark hearing in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Should the changes go ahead, ‘hyperandrogenic’ athletes, or those with ‘differences of sexual development’ (DSD), would have to take medicine to lower their testosterone levels should they wish to compete in female competitions.

While the IAAF were also recently forced to deny a report that stated they will argue Semenya should be classified as a “biological male”.

Semenya was snapped giving a peace sign as she made her way into court for the first of her five day hearing, with the outcome expected to be announced at the end of March.

The two-time Olympic 800m champion has long battled claims about her gender during her career, with Semenya recently forced to hit back as she said she is “unquestionably a woman”.

She had to undergo gender tests in 2009 after wining the 800m World Championship after exhibiting high levels of testosterone, which left her unable to compete for 11 months.

In a statement, South African officials said: “Women’s bodies, their well-being, their ability to earn a livelihood, their very identity, their privacy and sense of safety and belonging in the world, are being questioned.”

While Semenya’s legal team stated: “She looks forward to responding to the IAAF at the upcoming CAS hearing.

“Her genetic gift should be celebrated, not discriminated against.”

While a previous statement from the IAAF said: “The IAAF is not classifying any DSD athlete as male.

“To the contrary, we accept their legal sex without question, and permit them to compete in the female category.

“However if a DSD athlete has testes and male levels of testosterone, they get the same increases in bone and muscle size and strength and increases in haemoglobin that a male gets when they go through puberty, which is what gives men such a performance advantage over women.

“Therefore, to preserve fair competition in the female category, it is necessary to require DSD athletes to reduce their testosterone down to female levels before they compete at international level.”
