What are the Bafta 2019 Best Soundtrack nominees?
Here’s the films which are in the running for the award…
A Star Is Born
A Star Is Born features pop legend Lady Gaga in the role of a waitress/singer-songwriter who falls for a country star (Bradley Cooper).
The songs were written by Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper with collaboration from Mark Ronson, Jason Isbell, Natalie Hemby and Lori McKenna, among other artists.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly Bradley described the soundtrack as “an evolution, like the story.”
He added: “We knew the story we wanted to tell, and then the music really became a character in the movie.”
The movie includes the hit single Shallow which has already won the award for Best Original Song in a Feature Film at the 2018 Hollywood Music in Media Awards.
BLACKkKLANSMAN
Spike Lee’s BLACKkKlANSMAN tells the story of Ron Stallworth (John David Washington) – the first black police officer in Colorado Springs who successfully infiltates the local Ku Klux Klan.
The original music which features in the film was written by Terence Blanchard.
The jazz trumpeter who has written the score for every Spike Lee movie since Jungle Fever in 1991.
The films’ music incorporates the styles of classical and funk such as in the main theme Blut Und Boden (Blood and Soil).
If Beale Street Could Talk
If Beale Street Could Talk is a romantic drama set in in 1970s Harlem and an adaptation of the James Baldwin novel.
The movie’s original score was written by Nicholas Britell.
He also wrote the music for Moonlight which was nominated for both an Oscar and Golden Globe for Best Original Score in 2016.
Speaking about the film’s score to GoldDerby Nicholas said: “I was trying to explore something that felt like it was neither directly jazz nor directly classical. I was trying do something that was sort of its own kind of a sound world for the film.”
Isle Of Dogs
Isle Of Dogs is a stop-motion animation film by Wes Anderson about an outbreak of canine flu in a dystopian near-future Japan.
The score was written by French composer Alexandre Desplat.
He’s previously won two Oscars for his work The Grand Budapest Hotel and The Shape Of Water.
Songs in the film include the Japanese inspired tracks Shinto Shrine and Pagoda Slide.
Mary Poppins Returns
Mary Poppins Returns is the sequel to the 1964 classic Disney film.
The movie had a tough act to follow since the original contained iconic songs such as Spoonful Of Sugar and Supercalifragilisticexpialidcious.
US composer Marc Shaiman collaborated with Broadway lyricist Scott Wittman on the score.
Memorable songs include Trip A Little Light Fantastic and The Place Where Lost Things Go.
