NEARLY half a billion pounds of Britain’s bloated foreign aid budget was spent promoting green projects in wealthy nations such as Brazil, a new probe has revealed.
Some £65 million of taxpayers’ cash has been used to help protect forests and wildlife in the Brazilian Amazon.

It was part of £440 million spent last year by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy on 14 ‘middle income’ countries to promote low-carbon development.
As well as Brazil other recipients of our cash included wealthy countries such as South Africa and Mexico.
Another £354 million was spent by the Department for International Development last year in third world nations on mitigating and adapting to climate change.
The money is part of a five-year £5.8 billion International Climate Finance commitment.

The money was highlighted in a review by the Independent Commission for Aid Impact, which scrutinises how Britain’s £14 billion foreign aid budget is spent.
A Government spokesman said: “At home we’re world leaders in cutting emissions while growing our economy and abroad we’ve helped more than 17 million people gain access to clean energy since 2011 through our international climate finance.
“Our programmes are driving clean growth, providing clean energy to those who need it and helping to avoid the impacts of climate change on the poorest.”
