"Many Photos" - Schoolgirl who tried to join ISIS in 2014 'was never prosecuted'

A teenager from Bethnal Green who tried to join ISIS in Syria was hauled off a plane when police found a stash of extremist materials but was never prosecuted, it has emerged.

The 15-year-old tried to fly to Turkey from Heathrow in order to head to Syria in December 2014, two months before Shamima Begum went to join the terror group.

Police found ISIS propaganda videos, plans of a government building and a material on a target linked to the royal family but did not pass a file to prosecutors, The Times reported.

The revelation came as Shemima Begum, now 19, made a desperate plea to return to the UK with her newborn child, despite saying she had no regrets about joining ISIS.

Amira Abase, Kadiza Sultana and Shamima Begum are seen on CCTV at London Gatwick Airport in February 2015 as they fly to Turkey in order to join ISIS in Syria

The girl who travelled months earlier was one of five Bethnal Green schoolgirls who tried to fly to Syria but the only one who was stopped.

Who were the five Bethnal Green girls who went to join ISIS?

Sharmeena Begum - Flew to Turkey from London Heathrow in December 2014. No relation to Shamima.

Unnamed 15-year-old - tried to go to Turkey on the same 2014 flight but was stopped before take-off.

Shamima Begum - One of the three who flew from London Gatwick to Turkey in February 2015 and then went on to Syria. Has pleaded to be allowed to return to the UK with newborn son.

Amira Abase - Flew out in 2015 with Shamima who said in yesterday's interview she did not know whether Ms Abase was still alive.

Kadiza Sultana - Also flew out in 2015. Believed to have been killed in an airstrike in 2016.

It is claimed she possessed extremist material including videos of beheadings and sniper killings.

She is also said to have had copies of an ISIS magazine and lectures by a hate preacher linked to al-Qaeda.

However the CPS reportedly did not receive a file, partly because of the huge quantity of material discovered. She is believed to still be in Britain.

The unnamed teenager was apparently on the same 2014 flight as Sharmeena Begum, who is not related to Shamima.

Shamima was one of three schoolgirls, along with Kadiza Sultana and Amira Abase, from Bethnal Green Academy who left the UK in February 2015.

They flew from London Gatwick Airport to Turkey and later crossed the border into Syria.

Ms Sultana was reported to have been killed in an air strike in 2016 while Shamima said yesterday she did not know whether Ms Abase was still alive.

Yesterday Ms Begum Begum claimed she was 'just a housewife' when she left Britain to join ISIS in Syria and does not regret her decision.

She admitted she knew the group was carrying out beheadings and executions before she left, adding that she was 'okay with it'.

Asked if she felt she made a mistake travelling to Syria, she said: 'In a way, yes, but I don't regret it because it's changed me as a person. It's made me stronger, tougher.'

Ms Begum was speaking next to her newborn son, who she said she had named after her previous son who died, in accordance with her husband's wishes.

Asked to respond to comments that she could be potentially very dangerous if she returned, she said: 'They don't have any evidence against me doing anything dangerous

'When I went to Syria I was just a housewife, the entire four years I stayed at home, took care of my husband, took care of my kids, I never did anything... I never made propaganda, I never encouraged people to come to Syria.

'They don't really have proof that I did anything that is dangerous.'
