"Many Photos" - Mum jailed for draining pint of blood from toddler’s chest every week for six years to pretend he had rare disease

A MUM has been jailed for draining a pint of blood from her young son’s chest every week for six years so she could pretend he had a rare disease.

The 36-year-old trained nurse from Denmark performed 110 drains using a catheter on the boy starting from when he was just 11-months-old.

She told hospital doctors that his low blood count was due to a rare bone marrow disease, a court in Herning heard.

But doctors got suspicious and alerted police, who secretly filmed her.

A court-ordered psychiatric report said she suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy, a mental condition where caregivers make a child ill in order to attract attention to themselves.

The mum has now been sentenced to four years in jail:

When asked why she did it, the single mum reportedly told the court: “I wish I could answer you, but I can’t. I wish I could.

“It wasn’t a decision I just made. I don’t know when I started doing something I didn’t have to.

“It happened gradually. I flushed the blood down the toilet and burned the syringes in the bin.”

Cops set up a CCTV cameras in the woman’s home and watched as she drained blood into nine syringes from veins in the boy’s chest.

The boy is healthy and lives with his dad.

The woman was not identified.

SICK LIES Induced illness is a rare form of child abuse

Fabricated or induced illness (FII) occurs when a parent or carer, usually the child’s biological mother, exaggerates or deliberately causes symptoms of illness in the child.

FII is also known as “Munchausen’s syndrome by proxy” (not to be confused with Munchausen’s syndrome, where a person pretends to be ill or causes illness or injury to themselves).

Signs to look out for include a mum of carer who:

  • Persuades healthcare professionals that their child is ill when they’re perfectly healthy.

  • Exaggerates or lies about their child’s symptoms.

  • Manipulates test results to suggest the presence of illness – for example, by putting glucose in urine samples to suggest the child has diabetes.

  • Deliberately induces symptoms of illness – for example, by poisoning her child with unnecessary medication or other substances.
