KATIE Piper has revealed that she ran into a burning block of flats to help rescue trapped children while she was working as a volunteer police officer for a new TV show.
Katie stars in new Channel 4 programme Famous and Fighting Crime – teaming up with police in Peterborough last May.
The acid attack survivor was left horrified when she spotted a building that was on fire late one night – with most residents asleep and unaware that they needed to reach safety.
Speaking to The Mirror, 35-year-old Katie confessed that her initial instinct was to run away.
However, she quickly jumped into action, telling the publication: “I had to go against every ounce of my body which was telling me to run. Then it just hits you, there are children in there, people are asleep, we have to go in.
“I thought, ‘These people are going to get badly burned if we don’t help them.’ You run the numbers in your head and realise if we don’t go in, people could be killed or have their lives changed for ever.”
The mother-of-two joined her senior officer to help 50 residents escape the building – and thanks to their hard work nobody died in the blaze, even though everybody needed to be rehoused.
Reflecting on her own past traumas, the TV star poignantly added: “I vowed I would never put myself in danger again and here I am.”
Katie and her team were initially searching for a fugitive drug addict when they came across the fire.
With no emergency services around to help, they were left with no choice but to do what they could to save the residents.
The show’s executive producer, Ed Coulthard, praised the former Strictly Come Dancing star for her bravery following the incident.
He said: “She raced from floor to floor banging on doors to get the tenants out and on to the street. It was a frightening scene but she showed real courage.”
Discussing the programme, Katie also spoke out about her terror when she was briefed on a suspect who was launching acid attacks during her first day on the job.
The star struggled to keep her personal experiences and emotions at bay during the shift, with Katie suffering life-changing injuries when her ex-boyfriend Daniel Lynch coordinated an acid attack on her in 2008.

The attack was carried out by Stefan Sylvestre, and left Katie with severe burns, blindness, and disfigurement – with the beauty undergoing dozens of operations to cope with her injuries in the years since the attack.
Last year, Katie was left horrified when it was announced that Sylvestre had been released on parole after serving just nine years of his minimum 12-year sentence.
Lynch is currently still in jail after being imprisoned for life with a minimum sentence of 16 years.
Katie married Richard Sutton in November 2015 and the pair share two daughters together, four-year-old Belle, and 13-month-old Penelope.
Famous and Fighting Crime will air on Monday 11th February on Channel 4
