"Many Photos" - Fearless hippo sees off pride of lions coming for a drink in the waterhole he’s bathing in

HIP, hip, no way . . . as a brazen hippopotamus sees off a pride of lions who want to drink in the waterhole he’s bathing in.

The amazing photos show the hippo snapped from the opposite side of the waterhole as it emerges from the water.

Taken by photographer Jan Hrbacek, 55, at the Chobe National Park in Botswana, the photos show the hippo isn’t put off by the lions as it heads straight towards them before the trio of big cats spook and scatter.

Snapper Jan, from Czech Republic, said: “The lions come to drink at a small waterhole. Suddenly the hippo rushed out from the water and chased the lions out.

“Hippos are extremely territorial, they don’t tolerate other animals in their territory.

“The lions were scared of the hippo. Hippos are powerful animals. They could kill or injure them.”
