"Many Photos" - Dr. Pimple Popper reveals her top five skincare tips

Dr. Pimple Popper is no stranger to being exposed to imperfect skin, as the dermatologist is best-known for performing extractions on people's skin and popping some of the most humongous zits that exist.

And after her many years working in the skincare industry, Sandra Lee, a California-based dermatologist, has picked up a few tips, and some products that stand out to her as being exceptional among the massive sea of concoctions available.

Now the 48-year-old skin expert has revealed her must-have products and skincare tips that she swears by, including wearing SPF every single day, and using non-comedogenic products that won't cause pores to become clogged.

SPF

Sandra's first and foremost tip for ensuring your skin is in the best possible condition is SPF.

'If you are going to do one thing every single day, I ask that you please wear sunscreen. Your skin will thank you as this is truly the best way to prevent wrinkles and signs of aging on your skin,' she said.

The dermatologist added that it is important to choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen, as this means the cream contains agents that will protect skin against UVA and UVB rays - both of which pose a serious threat to skin.

She said: 'I suggest finding a moisturizer with SPF in it, so you can have one less step in the morning.

'You also want a two-in-one product that is non-comedogenic, meaning it won't clog pores and irritate or cause breakouts'.

Exfoliating cleanser

Next up in Sandra's list of skin must-haves is an exfoliating cleanser.

Her skincare line, SLMD Skincare, features a Salicylic Acid Exfoliating Cleanser ($25) that Sandra says is a 'best-seller'.

She described the product, saying: 'Salicylic Acid is an amazing exfoliating ingredient and it can really help to lighten up hyper-pigmentation and dark spots on the skin.

'It’s great as a face wash but I personally love to apply it like a mini-mask and leave it on my skin for a few minutes while I do something else like wash my hair or shave my legs,' she added.

Targeted spot treatment

Sandra also recommends using a targeted spot treatment on the skin in order to treat unpredictable breakouts.

She said: 'There are a lot of options out there but this is the best way to target an area or specific breakout.

'Have it handy for when you "feel one coming" or even when you just need a little reminder to keep your hands off an area.'

She said two of the best ingredients for spot treatments are belzoyl peroxide (BP) and salicylic acid.

Sandra advises using a BP spot treatment for red, inflamed pimples, and opting for a salicylic acid option for areas with congestion, blackheads and whiteheads.

Salicylic acid can also be used to treat and lighten areas of hyper-pigmentation, according to the dermatologist.

Retinol

Retinol is another skincare product that Sandra urges people with ageing and mature skin, in particular, to use.

As well as being a great anti-aging ingredient, Sandra says retinol is also beneficial for a number of other skin issues.

'Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, and it helps our skin cells regenerate - aka shed old, dead cells and grow new cells,' she explained.

According to Sandra, this helps skin to appear 'fresh and glowy', as well as working to improve areas of imperfect skin tone and texture.

It can also help to keep pores clear, she said.

'There are many different retinol products out there, both OTC and prescription, so it's important to find one that works well for you!' she added.

Sandra's recommendation for a good retinol product is her Retinol Serum, which retails for $40.00 on the SLMD website.

Non-comedogenic makeup and clean tools

Lastly, the skin-expert revealed that using makeup products that won't clog pores is vital in understanding how to keep your skin clear of breakouts.

She explained: 'Sometimes the culprit behind our breakouts or skin irritation has nothing to do with the skincare products we use, and is actually from our makeup and makeup tools.

'Always be sure you are using non-comedogenic makeup - this means it won't clog your pores and cause breakouts - and of course, wash those brushes!

She added: 'Makeup brushes are a home for bacteria, dirt, and oil. I know it can be a pain to keep them clean but it is worth it.'

Keep it clean! Make sure that your makeup brushes aren't causing breakouts by washing them thoroughly - and regularly - with special cleaners like the Beautyblender Blendercleanser (left, $18) or the Bare Minerals Well-Cared For Makeup Brush Cleanser (right, $14)

Sandra rose to fame after her YouTube channel, which she began uploading videos to in 2010, exploded.

Her videos, which see her performing extractions on people's skin, went viral.

Now, the dermatologist boasts almost five million subscribers on the video sharing platform, and even has her own TV show on TLC - Dr. Pimple Popper

The skin-expert recently revealed that her husband and fellow dermatologist Dr. Jeffrey Rebish, 46, who she met while the pair were in medical school, works in the same office as her.

Speaking to Refinery29, Jeffrey said that he wasn't aware of Sandra's YouTube videos until she had been on the platform for some time.

He said: 'She actually didn't even tell me what was going on until she had a serious following.

'Once YouTube was paying her and the videos were actually bringing in money, she filled me in,' he added.

The couple now both work in their California-based practice, which they took over from Sandra's father after finishing school.
