PRINCESS Diana and Princess Anne did not get along and had a frosty relationship, a new documentary reveals.
Channel 5’s new two-part series, Paxman on the Queen’s Children, lifts the lid on the dynamic between the Queen’s four children, Charles, Anne, Edward and Andrew, as well as their spouses.
The first of two episodes, to be shown tomorrow, reveals a tense and cold relationship between the Queen’s only daughter, Princess Anne, and Princess Diana.
The documentary claims to “explore how the Queen’s children shaped our view of the royals”.
Veteran broadcaster Jeremy Paxman delves into the complicated relationships between the eight, revealing that Princess Anne and Princess Diana did not get along.
Despite being beloved by the public and referred to as the ‘people’s princess’, it’s claimed Princess Anne wasn’t a fan.
Fellow journalist Richard Kay told Jeremy: “I remember Diana saying ‘if Anne’s there I’m off’ because Anne would usually say something rather cutting to her.
“Princess Anne, she had no time for Diana she didn’t like the way she went about her duty and the way she used the cameras and the media to promote herself in her eyes.
“Anne had a much more traditional approach to monarchy and royal duty”, the Daily Mail reported.
Jeremy claims that mum-of-two Princess Anne felt ‘eclipsed’ her sister-in-law, who made her appear ‘out of touch’.
While Princess Diana and her sister-in-law had a frosty relationship, she got on far better with another one of her in-laws, the documentary claims.
Prince Andrew, the Queen and Prince Philip’s third child, is said to have been close with Princess Diana.
Richard revealed: “Diana had a much warmer relationship with Prince Andrew who she had known well since she was a child.
“They had played together as children on the Sandringham Estate.”
And while the Prince served in the Falklands War, Jeremy said that it was Princess Diana who kept in touch with him, updating him on news from back home.
He goes on to say Princess Diana was not close with Prince Edward, the youngest of the Queen’s children.
Some relationships between the royals and their in-laws are well-known, including the turbulent timeline of Princess Diana and Sarah Ferguson’s relationship.
The two wives were friends before marrying into the royal family, and Diana was widely regarded as matchmaking Sarah and her future husband, Prince Andrew.
Over the years they went from friends to sisters-in-law, but later fell out, and Sarah is reported to have said one of the “saddest things” is she hadn’t spoken to her friend in a year when she died in 1997.
The first episode of Paxman on the Queen’s Children, airs on Tuesday, 9pm, on Channel 5.
