"Many Photos" - BBC axe Ali G Comic Relief sketch on Brexit after party leaders refuse to join in

BBC chiefs have axed a Comic Relief sketch featuring Ali G discussing Brexit – after killjoy party leaders refused to join in.

Organisers had asked senior politicians to take part in a spoof interview as part of next month’s fundraising effort.

Premier Theresa May and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn were among those invited to star in the fun parody called “Ali G’s Guide to Brexit”.

Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, who plays the fictional character, had agreed to waive his fee to record the brief clip.

But the idea has been ditched after the senior figures either snubbed the offer or failed to come up with a suitable date.

A source said: “It’s a great shame. The Brexit process has been intense and divisive and Ali G would have brought some much-needed humour to the debate.

“We’d have hoped the people who were invited would have the sense of humour to help the charity push.”

Red Nose Day chiefs are hoping to top the £76 million raised in 2017 with this year’s special on March 15 – two weeks before Britain leaves the EU.

Former Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson also turned down an offer to take part.

Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable and former Ukip boss Nigel Farage both agreed but the BBC’s strict rules of impartiality made it difficult without having the other parties on board.

Sir Vince said: “You don’t say no to Comic Relief. All politicians should be grown up enough to be able to take a joke at their own expense for such an important cause.”

A BBC spokesman said: “Comic Relief 2019 were exploring the possibility of doing a sketch for this year’s show entitled Ali G’s Guide To Brexit.

“However, owing to increasing logistical issues involving availability, timing, budget and uncertainty about the process and the timing of the Meaningful Vote in Parliament, which could render any recorded sketch out of date, we decided not to press ahead with this idea.”
