"Many Photos" - Barcelona train crash – One dead and around 100 injured as two trains collide in head-on smash in Spain

A WOMAN has died and around 100 passengers are injured after two trains collided head-on near Barcelona this evening.

Emergency services said the driver of the train, 26, was killed – while three of the injured are in serious condition.

One passenger, who gave her name as Laura, told reporters: “I noticed that the light went out suddenly, I hit myself very hard in the head, but luckily I’m fine.”

Another woman on board one of the trains said most of the passengers had managed to get off by themselves.

The accident happened on the R4 Rodalies line between St Vicenc Castellet and Manresa.

An investigation has been launched although initial reports suggest there may have been a signal failure.

Train operator RENFE expressed its condolences to the victims in a social media post.

A fleet of two dozen ambulances rushed to the scene – together with fire crews, engineers and the police.

Spain’s Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, wrote on Twitter: “Love and support for the families of the deceased and wounded.”
