"Many Photos" - Airline passenger arrested after four-week-old leopard cub found in his HAND LUGGAGE at Indian airport

A PASSENGER who smuggled a baby leopard cub in his hand luggage on a flight from Bangkok to Chennai has been arrested.

The tiny month-old cub was found by airport authorities in a plastic grocery basket hidden inside a bag.

Officials grew suspicious after hearing sounds from the bag as the passenger tried to rush out of the terminal in Chennai, the capital city of southern Tamil Nadu state.

An airport official said: “He was evasive in his replies so his baggage was opened for further examination.

“The animal was in a state of shock and was making trill sounds and appeared to be weak.”

ANIMAL SMUGGLING PROBE

The nationality of the 45-year-old passenger is still unclear.

The case is now being dealt with by the state’s Wildlife Crime Bureau.

A.O. Limatoshi, head of Chennai Wildlife Crime Bureau, said: “We have taken the custody of the passenger and are questioning him on the source of the animal.”

A line of enquiry is whether the man was carrying the leopard as part of an international animal smuggling gang.

Airport authorities have released a video showing officials feeding milky to the cub milk from a baby’s bottle.

Leopards can be found across the Asian continent but their population is currently declining because of habitat loss and poaching.
