WILLIAM Shakespeare is arguably the greatest playwright to ever live – and deserves to have his birthday celebrated accordingly.

But when is it – and how does his proud home town of Stratford-upon-Avon mark the big day.

When is Shakespeare’s birthday?

The exact date is unknown but it is most often celebrated on April 23, the same date he died aged 52.

We do know that he was born in Stratford-upon-Avon in April 1565.

His baptism is recorded in the Parish Register at Holy Trinity Church on Wednesday, April 26, 1564.

These usually took place within three days of birth, according to the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust.

How does Stratford-upon-Avon celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday?

Unsurprisingly, his home went all out in celebrating the famous writer’s 454th birthday with a parade and city-wide carnival.

It included live street theatre and music, vintage singers, street food and craft demonstrations across the weekend, according to local media.

On Sunday, the head boy of Shakespeare’s own King Edward VI School carried his quill from the writer’s birthplace to Holy Trinity Church where it was be placed in the hand of the effigy above his tomb.

“Each year we look to ensure William Shakespeare’s life is celebrated in style,” Sarah Summers, town clerk at Stratford-upon-Avon Town Council told the Herald.

She added: “This year we are excited to take the celebrations to a new level with many brand new features and activities spread over the entire weekend.”

The weekend was free of charge.
