Tory rebel Nick Boles today claimed 400 MPs back a soft Brexit - as he lashed Theresa May for failing to get cross party support for a deal.

And he repeated his call for Article 50 to be extended by nine months to provide more time for Brexit talks.

But he abandoned his plot for controls of the Brexit talks to be taken away from No 10 and handed to MPs sitting on the Liaison committee - admitting MPs on the committee did not back his plan.

But he urged the PM to reach across the political divide on Brexit, warning she will not be able to get any deal backed by Parliament if she carries on only trying to appeal to the DUP and Tories.

Mr Boles is part of a group of Tory and Labour MPs who are pushing for a Norway-style soft Brexit which would keep the UK tied to the EU customs union and single market.

Mr Boles told Sky News: 'We need to rule out a no deal Brexit. There is absolutely no parliamentary majority for it and it would be catastrophic harmful to the country.'

He added: 'Here is a majority for a reasonable soft Brexit deal – you could probably get about 400 MPs to vote for something.

'You are not going to get it if you rely only Conservative and DUP votes and what she has been doing is trying to construct something that she can squeak through parliament with a non-existent majority and we saw last night it has failed.'

His intervention comes as the Cabinet is at open war over what Mrs May's Plan B should be.

One group of ministers including David Gauke and Amber Rudd are pushing to stay in an EU customs union, while Brexiteers including Andrea Leadsom pushing  to ramp up no deal planning.

Mr Boles has tabled a Bill to delay Brexit by extending Article 50 by nine months if Mrs May cannot get a new deal is not backed by Parliament.

But tonight he revealed he  is tearing up another part of the Bill which would have  handed MPs sitting on the Liaison Committee control of the negotiations.

Explaining it, he said: 'The Bill would say this that if the PM has not secured a compromise bill and got it through Parliament by the end of the first week of March then she would be legally mandated to write to the EU and ask for a nine month extension to Article 50.

'That would stop no deal Brexit happening.'

Mrs May is scrambling to come up with a Brexit Plan B after her deal was voted down by 432 to 202 - the biggest defeat ever inflicted on a British Prime Minister.

Mrs May - who survived a no-confidence vote called by Jeremy Corbyn tonight - has said she will 'open discussions' with senior MPs from other parties as she tries to forge a Parliamentary majority on the way forward.

Her effective deputy David Lidington has been put in charge of the charm offensive.

The PM came out fighting this afternoon as she insisted the UK will still leave the EU at the end of March, and again ruled out staying in a customs union with the bloc.

But Mr Gauke appeared to contradict Mrs May by warning it was no longer possible for the government to 'box ourselves in' with red lines such as on the customs union.

And Chancellor Philip Hammond is said to have suggested to business leaders in a phone call last night that Article 50 would be extended and the government was entering a 'new era' in its approach.

The Tory splits deepened after a Cabinet meeting yesterday where Remain-leaning ministers including Amber Rudd, Greg Clark and Mr Gauke again urged Mrs May to call 'indicative votes' in the Commons on how to go forward with Brexit.

A Cabinet source told MailOnline a more hawkish group led by Jeremy Hunt, Sajid Javid, Gavin Williamson and Andrea Leadsom gave the idea a 'good kicking'. Another said the proposal was 'heavily sat on'.

Tory chairman Brandon Lewis also waded in by warning that party activists would not tolerate Mrs May making overtures to Labour MPs for a soft Brexit.
