A TOP Nasa official has claimed that its space boffins would let the world know if an apocalypse was on its way.
That’s because there would be “no way” for the space agency to hide a catastrophic asteroid if it was heading for Earth.
Bennu, an “apocalypse asteroid” that Nasa says has a one in 2,700 chance of hitting our planet in the next century, the space agency may have already issued its final warning.
If it collides with Earth, the asteroid will release 80,000 times more energy than the Hiroshima atomic bomb blast.
Michelle Thaller, the assistant director of science communication at Nasa, spoke to the website Big Think about Nasa’s apocalypse plans.
She was asked if Nasa would spread the news if a catastrophic asteroid was about to hit Earth.
“The day you have all the scientists buy up all the great wine, max out their credit cards and disappear, then you might want to worry,” Thaller joked.
She quickly added: “That’s not how we work.
“We are people, and if we knew something dangerous was coming, there would be no way for us to hide it.”
Nasa released a stunning snap of the asteroid Bennu last week.

The picture was taken by its OSIRIS-Rex space probe, which is orbiting the space rock to find out more about it.
