LOVE is in the air on The Secret Life of Four Year Olds – and just like later in life, it’s full of ups and downs.
The hit TV show from Channel 4 is now in its sixth series, and the second episode follows the cheeky tots at the nursery.
This week’s upcoming episode reveals a complicated relationship between Iris and her two love interests, Arthur and Frankie.
Something of a ladies man, Arthur claims “women are beautiful”, and even hands over a t-shirt he wins in a game of tug of war to Iris, as a symbol of his love.
An item to start off with, Iris and Arthur hold hands and profess their love for each other.
Arthur declares ‘we’ll be kissing forever’, as the pair hide away in the treehouse.
He says: “I made a wish for you to love me forever.”
And when asked, he says he loves her ‘ten hundred’.
As they eat lunch, Arthur says: “No matter what you eat and do, you’ll still be my true love.”
But their happily ever after comes to an end when Iris decides she’d rather be with Frankie.
Iris tells Arthur “I’m playing with him now”, referring to Frankie.
Watching, Dr Elizabeth Kilbey comments: “Iris appears to have switched her affection quite quickly.”
As they skip off together, she tells her new man: “Pretend we were boyfriend and girlfriend but then we were husband and wife.
“Can you pick some flowers, and give some to me?”
He obliges, and picks a bouquet for Iris who rewards him with a kiss.
But Arthur isn’t willing to give up his lady love so easily, and continues to chase Iris.
He keeps asking if Iris still loves him, and she replies bluntly with a “no”.
She says she’s Frankie’s girlfriend now, and to add insult to injury, she tells Arthur she’s no longer his friend.
Arthur repeatedly asks if she’s joking, as she wraps her arms around Frankie and kisses him.
Dr Elizabeth says: “Well that’s a bit provocative Iris. Not in front of Arthur.”
But she tells him to his face that Frankie is her boyfriend, causing Arthur to shake his head.
Speaking about Arthur, Iris says: “He loves me, he’s the one who loves me, I don’t.
“Frankie wants me to love him, and Arthur wants me to love him.”
Dr Elizabeth says: “Whilst playground romance might seem like an extension of imaginary play, research has shown us that children as young as four can actually experience true romantic feelings.”
Persistent, as they sit down to eat lunch Arthur tells Iris to kiss, him, but plants a smacker on Iris’ lips instead.
He pleads: “Can you please kiss me?”
To his surprise, Iris says yes, and declares she no longer loves Frankie.
The researchers observe how Arthur is “pleading” with Iris, and Dr Elizabeth says: “He’s trying to find a solution isn’t he?”
Buoyed by his progress, Arthur asks: “Will you please be my girlfriend?”
Iris replies ok, and tells him he “has to kiss her”, and after he pecks her hand she informs him: “Now I’m your girlfriend.”
Arthur is instantly ‘happy’, and the pair cuddle up together with Frankie forgotten.
The cute couple act out the entirety of their relationship, with the pair dressing up in old people’s clothing, including wigs and walking sticks.
As they go into their ‘house’, the loved up pair refer to each other as ‘my love’, ‘dear’ and ‘husband, as Iris lovingly puts Arthur’s hat and coat on him.
And they leave together arm in arm, Frankie just a distant memory.
The Secret Life of Four Year Olds airs on Channel 4 on Thursdays at 8pm.
