The Joker is arguably one of the most famous villains of all time. Seriously, he’s one of the only villains to successfully cross over into multiple mediums. He’s been legendary across live-action TV, animated TV, live-action films, animated films, and even video games. Pretty impressive for a comic book character. He’s been played by legendary performers, including Cesar Romero, Jack Nicholson, Mark Hamill, and Heath Ledger (and yes, I’m leaving a certain someone off the list of “legendary” performers).
With a new Joker performance entering the fold this year with Joaquin Phoenix in the part, let’s take a look at other heavy hitters in Hollywood that came close to putting their spin on the character.
(Or, they got kind of close anyway.)
Willem Dafoe
Of the actors we’re going to talk about, Willem Dafoe was the farthest from being cast as The Joker. He was never formally offered the role at any time in his career, but according to Dafoe, he came close to being called on for an audition.
You see, ever since people realized that Dafoe had one of the wickedest smiles in the business, Dafoe has come up in almost every “fan-casting” scenario when they announce that a movie that includes The Joker. A lot of people wanted him in there, including one of the screenwriters of Tim Burton’s Batman, Sam Hamm (yes, that’s the man’ real name).
Dafoe revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that:
“Hamm said something about how physically I would be perfect for the part, but they never offered it to me.”
It’s a damn shame he’s never been cast in the part to date. Maybe if they really adapt The Dark Knight Returns to live-action he can play the older version of The Joker? That might be cool?
Ray Liotta
Now, unlike Dafoe who was never formally offered the part of The Joker, Ray Liotta was actually given the offer to join Tim Burton’s first run at the character. And Liotta had a legit shot at landing the part, but his own hubris fucked him over.
Liotta turned down the offer to even meet about playing The Joker. Unsurprisingly, Liotta kind of regrets that decision.
A lot. From an interview with The Playlist, Liotta recalled:
“I remember right after a movie I did, Something Wild, Tim Burton wanted to meet me for Batman. And at that time, I said, ‘What are you kidding me? I’m an actor.’ But now it’s changed; now it’s good because if you do that you get other movies.”
On one hand, Liotta was in Goodfellas only a year after Batman came out. On the other, I forgot to mention something else: He wasn’t just called to audition for The Joker. Burton was interested in Liotta for The Joker or goddamn Batman.
Liotta fucked this one up big time.
Tim Curry
This one is almost mythical. You see, Curry was never considered for any live-action versions of The Joker, but he was a stone’s throw away from playing The Joker on Batman: The Animated Series in the early 1990s, a role that was ultimately filled by Mark Hamill. There are rumors that Curry was cast, but fired after children in test audiences were completely terrified by his performance.
The actual story is way less cool. Curry told ScreenGeek the truth in 2017, but it’s kind of fascinating in its own way:
“I did play Joker for a while, but I had bronchitis and they fired me— and hired Mark Hamill. That’s life.”
Again, not as exciting as the “scared the actual shit out of children” myth, but if Curry hadn’t gotten sick, Mark Hamill may never have played The Joker. That’s almost impossible for me to imagine, not only as a fan of The Animated Series, but as a fan of the Arkham video games too.
Adrien Brody
Look, Adrien Brody is a fantastic actor whose career never really took off the way it should have, but Brody was fucked. While he was in consideration for The Joker, he was unfortunately up against Heath Ledger. This was the auditions for The Dark Knight, and I’m going to be honest, I feel bad for anyone who was auditioning against Ledger. They never had a chance.
There’s not a whole lot else to say about poor Adrien Brody. Like, there’s a quote from 2017 where he went on record about wanting to play The Joker in the future, but what fucking actor wouldn’t?
Ryan Gosling
Let’s say right up front that this one is almost purely based on speculation. It seems like accurate speculation, but Gosling has never addressed whether or not any of what follows is true, so take some of this with a grain of salt.
Ryan Gosling was supposedly offered the part of The Joker for Suicide Squad all the way back in 2014. He obviously didn’t play the part, but this information comes from The Wrap which revealed something pretty fascinating: Jared Leto was only offered the part of The Joker after Gosling declined.
Meaning that Gosling was the first choice to play “thug-Joker.” Which is so goddamn weird to me considering how restrained Gosling is an actor. In any case, he turned it down because he didn’t want to be locked-in via contract for multiple movies, and seeing how Suicide Squad turned out… Good call.
