IVAN PERISIC came incredibly close to signing for Manchester United this summer and when the move didn’t materialise Jose Mourinho was left frustrated
While the Croatian was flattered by the offer from the Special One, he was convinced to stay at the San Siro by incoming boss Luciano Spalletti.
The Inter Milan winger was set to join United at a time when there was a negative aura around the club, which has since changed since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over.
But, Perisic praised the Red Devils’ former boss and claimed he was honoured by the interest from such a respected club and a boss who boasts plenty of silverware.
Speaking to Four Four Two, he said: “It’s true that an offer from Manchester United was on the table and I was close to leaving Inter.
“But I decided to stay and Spalletti’s perseverance to keep me played a big role. In football, small details in these situations are key.
“Admiration from a coach like Mourinho is definitely something that flattered me.
“It’s confirmation of hard work and good performances.
“When you’re praised by a guy like Mourinho- the manager of a huge club like Manchester United- it’s difficult not to think about such an offer.
“I’m glad he has a high opinion of me and these things motivate me to work hard and train hard, to achieve the best performances.”
The 29-year-old has bagged three goals and two assists in Serie A this season, but his performance at the World Cup caught the eye of plenty of clubs.
Perisic scored three goals and provided one assist from seven appearances this summer, but Jessee Lingard was unlikely to have been too upset that he didn’t join him at Old Trafford this season.
The Croatian broke England’s hearts during the World Cup, when he scored a controversial goal in the semi-finals.

Despite now turning down the chance to move to the Premier League twice, Perisic has admitted that he is open to a move to the English league later in his career.
He said: “In football, you never say never.
“From the beginning of my career, I’ve had the ambition to play in as many big leagues as possible and I still have that desire to test myself in other leagues. And I mean in the Spanish or English leagues.”
