ITV drama Manhunt described how a supermarket receipt helped catch Milly Dowler’s killer Levi Bellfield in 2004.
The three part series came to a dramatic conclusion on Tuesday and showed coppers had 72 hours to gather forensic evidence to convict him after his arrest.
His girlfriend had mentioned that he had been acting strange on the date French student Amelie Delagrange was killed, when the couple shopped in Somerfields.
The police embarked on a hunt to prove it was the same date, and searched through reams of receipts before finally coming across the paper evidence.
DS Jo Brunt (Katie Lyon) read out the items she had purchased, which included Pampers nappies, baby wipes, Nescafe, Fairy liquid and baby powder, to the total of £41.08″
And people at home were stunned that the breadcrumb of evidence had lead to Bellfield going to trial.

Earlier in the episode, it was revealed Hounslow police forgot to view a vital piece of video evidence after Sarah Knight was attacked.
If the tape had been seen after Sarah had been run over, it would have almost certainly led them to Bellfied before Amelie was murdered.
Detective Colin Sutton flew to France and delivered the devastating news to her parents.
Her father replied: “Mistakes get made. We are human.
“But thank you for telling us. Thank you for your honesty. What is important to us is that you carry on. And you bring this evil man to justice.”
Their reaction was applauded on Twitter by fans, who said it left them in tears.
One said: “Moved to tears by this. RIP those girls”
Another wrote: “How incredibly understanding Amelie’s parents were, and right they were told about the massive mistake. Yes, human error happens but it shouldn’t happen in an attempted murder investigation leading to Amelie’s death.
“Everything should’ve been checked & double checked!”

In 2008, Bellfield was found guilty of murdering Amelie Delagrange and Marsha McDonnell, and of the attempting to murder Sarah Knight.
He was sentenced to spend his whole life in prison.
After Surrey police continued with their investigation, Bellfield was found guilty of abducting, raping and murdering Milly Dowler, for which he received another whole life sentence in June 2011.
