Marvel Studios Plot twists are a make-it-or-break-it story telling device in movies. Do it well, and your film becomes an instant classic; fuck it up and and we’re all gonna make fun of you. So, it stands to reason, that the MCU relies on this device heavily. Sometimes, it’s a twist that’s been festering for years like the Winter Soldier reveal or the revelation that The Mandarin is really Trevor Slattery. Again, do it right vs. doing it wrong.
But there are plenty of other twists that are planned in the writing stage and even when they’re filming the latest MCU entry, that get dropped for a multitude of reasons. Imagine how much these would have changed the MCU as we know it today.
It breaks my brain.
Marvel Studios Loki’s return in Age of Ultron Loki was easily the best part of Thor, The Dark World & The Avengers , and was actually set to make an appearance in Avengers: Age of Ultron , during the tragically cut vision scene. Originally, the scene where Thor communicates with the Norns, was supposed to be longer and have more exposition, giving us info about the Infinity stones and predict the fall of Asgard.
In it, Loki was supposed to appear and reference his takeover of the throne, which would explain why Thor wasn’t all too surprised to see his brother in the sequel. Alas, test audiences were confused and the sequence was cut.
Marvel Studios Maya Hansen was supposed to be the big bad in Iron Man 3 We all know that the biggest weakness of this film is the Mandarin twist. Personally, I thought it was a great subversion of the audiences exceptions and a very timely commentary on how manufactured news can be. But, the bit about Aldrich Killian as the ‘real’ Mandarin was BS. Originally, however, Maya Hansen was supposed to be the villain, with Killian as the public face of AIM.
According to director Shane Black, Marvel felt that making her the bad guy would cause toy sales to suffer, so they requested that the villain become male. Personally, having her as the real villain would have made the film more complex.
Shame on you Marvel.
Columbia Pictures Tobey Maguire almost cameoed in The Incredible Hulk Since the start of the MCU, everyone’s been clamouring for Spidey. While I’m a huge fan of Tom Holland’s portrayal, Tobey’s got a soft spot in my heart. He’s so popular, that even before his cameo in Civil War , Hulk’s director, Louis Leterrier, went to Sony to ask if he could have Tobey for an hour or two.
Since Spider-Man 3 came out a year prior, he wanted to capitalize on that (and help undo some of the stupid shit that Sony did with the third film) and have Banner meet with Dr. Sterns at Empire University, and have a quick shot of Maguire. Sony shut that down definitively.
It could have been something, but at the same time, I like how Peter Parker ended up joining the MCU.
Marvel Studios Captain Marvel was supposed to debut in Age of Ultron While we’re anxiously awaiting the premiere of Captain Marvel in her own film, this wasn’t the original plan. There was an idea to introduce her at the end of Age of Ultron in the new Avengers line up.
Ultimately, MCU guru Kevin Feige felt that she’d be better served with her origin story first, and it’d be confusing to just have her show up out of context. This is easily one of his better ideas. This way, she gets her film, we see how kickass she is, and then she saves the day in Endgame , then becomes the face of the MCU going forward.
Marvel Comics Wiki Nightmare was supposed to be the big bad in Doctor Strange , not Dormammu The original plan was for Doctor Strange to fight Nightmare, the ruler of the Dream Dimension. When it came down to it, however, for reasons we’ve yet to see play out, Kevin Feige made a case against it.
In a film already full of expositions and alternate worlds, the Dark Dimension was the easiest for audiences to swallow, and Dormammu as the most recognizable villain. Plus there are some ties to the Quantum Realm, as well as some future ideas that Marvel is holding close to the chest.
On the plus side, Nightmare is being planned for the recently announced Doctor Strange 2 .
Marvel Studios Arnim Zola was supposed to show up in Ant-Man Debuting in Captain America: The First Avenger and meeting his demise The Winter Soldier , he was supposed to show up in this film, with a radical redesign.
During the flashback scene with Howard Stark, Hank Pym and Peggy Carter, he was supposed to be sitting at the table with them, plotting out SHIELD’s future. For some reason, he and more overt references to Hydra, were cut out.
Marvel Studios The ‘real’ Mandarin was supposed to show up in Iron Man 3 When Jon Favreau was still attached to direct the film, he had a plan that focused on more of the Ten Rings and the Mandarin as the villain. When he left the project and Shane Black stepped in, the plans changed.
According to the trades, the powers-the-be at Marvel thought that a) people didn’t care about the Mandarin and b) that it was just too racist, so they messed with the character.
For me, had they omitted the actor bit, and legitimately had him as a pastiche of villain cliches to manufacture fear, it would have made the film legendary.
Marvel Studios Howard Stark was going to be the villain in Iron Man There were a lot of ideas for the first Iron Man film; Tom Cruise as Tony Stark, the Mandarin as the villain, etc.. The most interesting, however was that Howard Stark wasn’t dead, and he’d be the antagonist of the film.
Essentially, he’d play the role that Obediah Stane had in the film; fighting Tony, colluding with the bad guys and trying to kill his son. Thankfully, they keep Howard as the tough-love dad/genius and created a compelling farther/son arc for the MCU.
Universal Pictures/Marvel Studios Captain America’s original cameo From the very beginning of the MCU, there was a plan to build towards a team-up film. So, to prepare for it, easter eggs were seeded. Hence, in The Incredible Hulk , there was a scene filmed where Banner removes himself to the arctic and tries to kill himself, only for The Hulk to spit the bullet out.
In this scene, there’s a shot of Captain America and his shield, buried in the ice. When this scene was relegated to the deleted pile, this origin became non-canon.
Marvel Studios Hela almost showed up in The Dark World Marvel finally got it right when they cast Cate Blanchett as the absolutely kickass (and sublimely sexy) Hela in Ragnarok . While she was stellar in this film, she was supposed to be the antagonist for the previous entry.
For some reason, during the preproduction process, the story didn’t work out and the villain was changed to Malekith the Accursed. This was probably for the best though. While he wasn’t the best bad guy, odds are Hela’s tragic backstory would have bee short-changed and we wouldn’t have had the cool twist that Odin had a firstborn who was a murderous tyrant.
Marvel Comics Wiki Beta Ray Bill was supposed to show up in Ragnarok In earlier drafts of the film, there was no Hulk. Originally, the gladiator who Thor fights, then sways to his side, was meant to be Beta Ray Bill.
When it was decided that they wanted to evolve the plot to include Hulk as a gladiator, they relegated Beta Ray to a secondary role, but it didn’t do him justice. So Kevin Feige decided that if you can’t do a character justice, do it later, and better.
Which means at some point or another, we’re gonna see this guy kick ass.
Marvel Studios There was supposed to be an entire city in the Quantum Realm When we learned that Janet Van Dyne had been trapped in the Quantum Realm for over 30 years, it was thought that perhaps more people had ventured in there/or natively lived there and survived with her. There was actually concept art drawn up of a city, as well as high tech costumes, but it was dropped.
According to rumours, there’s more to learn about the Realm in Endgame , and Marvel wanted the focus tom be on Janet, Hope and Hank.
Marvel Studios Adam Warlock was supposed to appear in Vol. 2 As a huge fan of Adam Warlock, James Gunn wanted to introduce him in this film and make him a huge part of it. But then, he felt that it made the film too bloated, and his presence in the MCU would alter the stakes of Infinity War .
Instead, he was seeded in the post-credits scene, with the plan to show up in the third entry, whenever it gets made. Seriously Marvel and Disney, get on that.
Marvel Studios Peter Parker was originally going to disclose his identity to the press in Homecoming At the end of the film, the original idea, was to have Peter join the Avengers, get in front of the press, and have his own “I am Iron Man” moment.
This would have led to Peter wrestling with his identity, fame and whatnot in any inevitable sequels. Marvel decided not to go through with it and keep him as the friendly neighbourhood Spiderman for just a little bit longer
Marvel Studios An alternate ending to Iron Man 2 , was for Whiplash to take Pepper The final act of the film kind of falls flat, doesn’t it. Iron Man and War Machine take on the drones and save people, then take on Whiplash in a giant suit with whips, and it’s a quick battle. But it’s just another suit on suit fight.
There was an original ending that had Vanko forgo the suit and kidnap Pepper. Tony had to fly back to rescue her, and almost lose his life to save hers, until Rhodey comes to kick ass. It was a bit anticlimactic and positioned War Machine as the hero, but it would have deepened the connection between Tony and Pepper.
Marvel Studios Odin willingly sacrifices Frigga in The Dark World In the MCU, Odin’s always been a grey character. He’s not the greatest dad, and the revelations of his bloodthirsty nature paint him a different light, but he’s never been a true bad guy. If this alternate scene had been included, he wold have been.
While Fridge is being held by a Dark Elf, Odin comes in to fight, but decides to lay down his staff instead. Believing this is the only way to protect the Aether, he allows Frigga to die.
This would have made him irredeemable.
