New photo UK’s most controversial landlord says he loves Universal Credit after getting fed-up with tenants splashing their cash on booze

BRITAIN’S most controversial landlord has revealed he LOVES Universal Credit – after getting fed up with tenants blowing their benefits on drink and drugs.

Multi-millionaire Fergus Wilson, 70, told The Sun Online the new welfare system was a “good idea” because it made people responsible for their own budgets.

Britain’s biggest buy-to-let landlord gained notoriety in 2017 when he banned “coloured” people – because he said they made his properties “smell of curry”.

Earlier this week the tycoon announced he was planning to make dozens of families homeless by issuing eviction notices to around 90 homes in Ashford – after he decided to sell his portfolio of 700 homes.

The multimillionaire is expected to issue hundreds more evictions in the coming months before retiring to “take life easy”.

‘Universal Credit is a good idea’

When contacted by The Sun Online, Mr Wilson said he backed Universal Credit, which bundles six existing benefits into a single monthly payment to mirror being paid a salary because people would be responsible for themselves.

He told The Sun Online: “On the face of it, it’s nice and simple. Giving them the money directly so they are responsible for running their budgets on the face of it is a good thing. “

He also said it was a good idea because if people cannot manage their budgets, they will have the cash taken off them and given direct to landlords.

He said: “From day one people who are administering Universal Credit have got to take a view immediately ‘is this person capable of managing their own financial affairs?'”.

The landlord added: “Would you give £100 to man with alcohol abuse problem? Common sense to me would say no.”

Taking in homeless people ‘has tended to backfire’

The portly 70-year-old revealed he’d been burned in the past when renting out to homeless people on housing benefits.

Mr Wilson said: “I have taken homeless people because various charities have asked me to be hospitable. It has tended to backfire. There are some people you can’t help.

“In my experience they do not pay the rent. The ones I have taken…there were issues with rent and people living in the garage.”

He said he’d taken on people claiming housing benefit – the previous system – who then blew their cash on “drink and drug abuse”.

Today, he showed The Sun Online inside some of his properties including one he bought for £140,000 in 2003 that is now worth £350,000.

The landlord revealed he could get as much as £1,200-a-month in rent for the home but stressed it was open to anyone “who could afford it”.

Mr Wilson revealed earlier this week how he was giving 90 households in Ashford, in Kent, just two months to leave after he decided to sell his vast property portfolio in the county, estimated to be worth more than £200m.

Selling his 700 property portfolio worth more than £200m

It came a month after his wife Judith, 68, was fined when a court ruled she had failed to supply hot water to a disabled tenant.

He said: “It’s an awful lot of money. There are obviously people you want to give money to. It’s a bit like winning the National Lottery.

“I am going to do more than grow runner beans I know that.

“I’m not going to buy a Rolls-Royce. I could have bought one. I came across a couple in the past who owned a Rolls-Royce but they have a semi-detached house. I thought ‘you’ve not quite got this right’.

“I’m happy as I am. I’m not an unhappy chap. I’m a very happy chap. I try and help people.

“I just try and accommodate them all.

“We bought the houses years ago when they were cheaper. It takes a lot of time.”

I think there’s only one person who can save the housing situation in Britain and that’s me

The controversial tycoon claimed the government should consider paying him to becoming a housing tsar.

He blamed the risk of homelessness on the failure of national policy to build more homes and immigration from eastern Europe for the housing shortage.

He said: “I think there’s only one person who can save the housing situation in Britain and that’s me.

“If they paid Jose Mourinho £18 million at Manchester United then I think I’m worth £20 million.

“Give me £20 million and I will sort out the entire housing situation in the country.

“I’d do a better job than the politicians in Westminster. If they want me to be then they will have to cough the money up.”

The Sun wants to Make Universal Credit Work

Universal Credit replaces six benefits with a single monthly payment.

One million people are already receiving it and by the time the system is fully rolled out in 2023, nearly 7 million will be on it.

But there are big problems with the flagship new system – it takes 5 weeks to get the first payment and it could leave some families worse off by thousands of pounds a year.

And while working families can claim back up to 85 per cent of their childcare costs, they must find the money to pay for childcare upfront – we’ve heard of families waiting up to 6 months for the money.

Working parents across the country told us they’ve been unable to take on more hours – or have even turned down better paid jobs or more hours because of the amount they get their benefits cut.

It’s time to Make Universal Credit work. We want the government to:

  1. Get paid faster: The Government must slash the time Brits wait for their first Universal Credit payments from five to two weeks, helping stop 7 million from being pushed into debt.

  2. Keep more of what you earn: The work allowance should be increased and the taper rate should be slashed from from 63p to 50p, helping at least 4 million families.

  3. Don’t get punished for having a family: Parents should get the 85 per cent of the money they can claim for childcare upfront instead of being paid in arrears.

Together, these changes will help Make Universal Credit Work.
