New photo Cargo jet crashes after landing at the wrong airport in Iran, leaving 15 on board feared dead

Up to 15 are feared dead after a cargo plane 'landed at the wrong airport' amid severe weather in Iran and crashed into a residential building before exploding.

The Boeing 707, which was carrying meat from Kyrgyzstan, skidded off a runway after an emergency landing in the town of Safadasht, near the Iranian capital of Tehran.

There were 16 people onboard and only the flight engineer survived, according to Fars news agency, which is considered close to the military.

The plane crashed at Fath Airport when it was meant to land at the nearby Payam International Airport, about 25 miles west of Tehran, the Iranian capital. Authorities did not immediately offer a reason for the crew's mistake.

Fath Airport belongs to Iran's powerful paramilitary Revolutionary Guard but it wasn't immediately clear who owns the plane. Rescuers say the bodies of seven people have been recovered with searches continuing.

Fire immediately engulfed the aircraft after it skidded off a runway and crashed into a wall separating the air field from a residential neighborhood. Images showed the burned-out tail of the plane sticking out, surrounding by charred homes.

Earlier, local media had reported that at least 10 people were onboard without confirming any casualties.

'It exited the runway during the landing and caught fire after hitting the wall at the end of the runway,' the army statement said.

State broadcaster IRIB showed footage of burning wreckage, while several agencies showed teams of rescue workers around the charred fusilage.

'Details of the accident and martrydom or injury of the flight team is still being investigated,' the army said.

Iranians often use the word 'martyrdom' for those who die in war or national service, suggesting the aircraft may have belong to the air force. The air force does operate Boeing 707s.

The Iranian air force does operate Boeing 707s and it also has a civilian airline, SAHA.

Authorities initially said they feared all on board had been killed, but reports afterward said one crew member was taken to a local hospital.
