ASDA may have sparked another petrol price war as the supermarket is cutting the price of unleaded and diesel from tomorrow.

The move will see unleaded prices drop by up to 1p a litre, while diesel prices will fall by up to 2p a litre at Asda’s 320 petrol stations.

It takes Asda’s national price cap to 113.7ppl on unleaded and 123.7ppl on diesel.

Asda says it’s the seventh fuel price drop it’s delivered since October 26, with unleaded falling by 14p a litre and diesel by 11p a litre.

The supermarket says the move follows “continued decreases” in the wholesale cost – the price retailers pay for petrol.

When Asda drops petrol prices, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco tend to follow.

Ways to cut down on your fuel costs

HERE are some tips on how you can slash the cost of fuel

1. Make your car more fuel-efficient. You can do this by keeping your tyres inflated, taking the roof rack off, emptying your car of clutter and turning off your air con when driving at lower speeds.


2. Find the cheapest fuel prices. PetrolPrices.com and Confused.com allows you to search prices of UK petrol stations. All you need to do is enter in your postcode and tell it how far you want to travel (up to 20 miles).


3. Drive more efficiently. Some ways to do this, include:

• Accelerate gradually without over-revving


• Always drive on the highest possible gear


• If you can, allow your car to slow down naturally as your brake is a money burner


• Re-starting your car is expensive, if you can keep moving

Morrisons, Sainsbury’s and Tesco came under fire last week after the RAC claimed they were “cheating” drivers out of cheaper fuel prices.

The motoring group accused the three supermarkets of failing to compete as closely on the price of unleaded as they usually do, which they said has added 3p a litre to the average fuel bill.

Average unleaded prices now stand at 120.2p a litre, while diesel now stands at 129.5p a litre, according to price comparison website PetrolPrices.com

Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury’s, and Tesco engaged in a price war at the end of last year, with the supermarkets all lowering prices on more than one occasion.
