"Many Photos" - Where’s it snowing in the UK and is the Beast from the East back?

TEMPERATURES will continue to plummet this week as the first heavy snowfall of 2019 is seen across the UK.

But will it hit your area? Here’s what we know about the snow and whether the Beast of the East is really back.

Where is it snowing in the UK?

Snow will keep coming down across Britain for the next two weeks as the Met Office has extended its ice warning again.

The ice warning is in place until 11am on January 24, and only London, south west England and most of Wales have escaped the warning.

Weather forecasters have warned people travelling of the ice on untreated roads and longer journey times.

By next Friday parts snowfall is projected to rise to 15cm.

But the freeze threatens to last well into February with more frost, ice and snow on the way after another day today.

A spokeswoman for the Met Office said Wednesday will be one of the coldest days of the week, “but with a lot of sunshine to compensate”.

“Those concerned about the yellow warnings should allow extra time for journeys and take extra care on untreated roads and pavements,” she said.

“It’s patches of ice left over from snow showers that people should look out for.”

Brits face freezing nights as the mercury is set to plummet as low as -5C in some parts

Is Beast from the East back?

Forecasters are fearing “Beast from the East 2” as strong winds and freezing temperatures rip through the country.

Frigid weather that swept in from over Russia was dubbed the “Beast from the East” for a month in February/March 2018.

Winds from Siberia pushed in from the east, causing the mercury to plummet – with even daytime temperatures struggling to rise above zero.

The devastating weather front brought heavy snowfall to large areas and combined with Storm Emma.

In 2019 there are also fear that the imminent cold weather will be driven by a warming of the air over the North Pole dragging colder winds in from the east – a so-called Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW).

SSW was the driver for last year’s Beast from the East which brought the country to a shivering standstill at the end of winter.

Met Office forecaster Sarah Kent said: “SSW has happened and it gives us an increased likelihood of colder weather in the UK.”

Britain could see the first widespread snow of winter by the weekend of January 26/27 as the mild weather gives way to a freezing blast.

John Hammond, forecaster for Weathertrending, said: “By the weekend, I expect snow will be falling in places – initially across northern hills.

“But there’s a significant risk of more widespread snowfall as the next Atlantic system ‘bumps’ into the cold air, by then resident across the UK.”
