CALL The Midwife has made a welcome return to TV and with it comes much loved actor Stephen McGann.
But who does he play in the show? And what else has he been in? Here is what we know…

Who is Stephen McGann?
Stephen McGann, 54, was born February 2, 1963 in Merseyside and is an English actor.
He began his acting career in 1982, starring in the West End musical Yakety Yak.
Stephen shot to national fame when he starred in Emmerdale from 1999 until 2002 playing Sean Reynolds.
More recently Stephen is known for Call The Midwife.

Who does Stephen play in Call The Midwife?
Stephen plays Dr Patrick Turner – a GP who works closely with the midwives of Nonnatus House.
He has been a cast member since the first season in 2012.
His character had a mental breakdown after WWII in 1945, and then lost his wife in 1957.
Doctor Turner then married Sister Bernadette and the two went on to adopt a daughter together.

Who are Stephen’s famous brothers?
Stephen is the youngest of a dynasty of acting brothers.
His oldest brother Joe, 59, was famous in the 90s for starring in sitcom The Upper Hand.
His brother Paul, 58 is probably the most famous of the three and has starred in many TV shows and films, including Agatha Christie’s Marple, The Musketeers, Holby City and Doctor Who.
His other brother Mark, 56, is known for his work on the stage.
The brothers all starred together in the 1995 mini-series The Hanging Gale.

Is Stephen married?
Stephen is actually married to Call the Midwife Creator and writer Heidi Thomas.
They have one son, Dominic.
Heidi once revealed that she keeps the show’s scripts hidden away from her husband – despite the fact that he stars in the drama.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
Nicollette says: “I don’t like diets – I see it, I eat it! I believe in eating healthily with lots of protein, vegetables and carbs to give you energy.”
