THE Home Secretary who voted Remain only to switch to supporting Brexit is said to be primed for the role of PM.
Here is what you need to know about the Brexit-backing son of Pakistani immigrants and what he’s said about Brexit.
What are Sajid Javid’s odds of taking over as Prime Minister?
He’s currently the bookie’s third favourite to take over from Theresa May with odds of 7/1.
Only Boris Johnson and Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn are more likely to take the reins, with both at 5/1.
What’s his background?
Sajid Javid, 49, has been the Conservative MP for Bromsgrove since 2010.
On April 30, 2018, he was appointed Home Secretary after Amber Rudd was forced to quit in the wake of the Windrush scandal.
He is the first person from an ethnic minority to hold one of the top four positions in government (the others being Prime Minister, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Foreign Secretary).
Sajid was born in Rochdale, Lancs, as one of five sons.
His mother and bus driver father had moved here from Pakistan in the 1960s.
The family moved to Bristol, where Sajid went to a state comprehensive before studying economics and politics at the University of Exeter.
Sajid is said to have been a keen Thatcherite since he was a teenager and still has the Iron Lady’s portrait on his wall.
After uni, where he joined the Conservative party, Sajid worked as a banker in New York, London and Singapore.
He was said to be earning £3million a year as a director of Deutsche Bank when he quit in 2009 to pursue a career in politics.
After being elected to Parliament he quickly became a junior Treasury minister in David Cameron’s government.
He has also served as Equalities Minister, Culture Secretary and Business Secretary.
In 2016 the MP launched a “joint ticket” Tory leadership bid with Stephen Crabb, hoping to become Chancellor with Crabb as PM.
Theresa May became leader and made him Communities, Local Government and Housing Secretary, in which post he was criticised for his response to the Grenfell Tower disaster.
Sajid and his wife Laura have four children.
He has received hate mail for marrying a non-Muslim even though he says he does not practise any religion.
What has Sajid Javid said about Brexit?
Mr Javid backed Remain in the EU referendum in 2016.
But he has since come out as a Leaver, so his appointment to Theresa May’s top team tips the balance in favour of a harder Brexit.
He is known to hold Eurosceptic views.
As a student in 1990 he was thrown out of the Conservative party conference for handing out leaflets opposing Britain joining the Exchange Rate Mechanism, a forerunner of the single currency.
Last year he said the Tories’ disastrous general election campaign had been too focused on Europe when they should have talked more about housing and the economy.
He told the Observer: “While we were banging on about Brexit, a lot of people were saying, ‘OK, …but what about housing? What about education? What about transport? What about the health service?”
Earlier this month he urged Tory Remain rebels to drop demands for Britain to stay in a customs union with the EU.
Could Sajid Javid make a bid for Tory leader?
Javid said he would launch a leadership challenge if Theresa May’s Brexit deal collapses and she’s ousted as Prime Minister.
This plan was scuppered when May won a vote to remain PM after a vote of no confidence was called.
However, only securing 63 per cent of her party’s backing, May is still vulnerable.
He has reportedly begun to gather support from ministers and is creating a team to help him bid to become the first non-white PM.
One Cabinet minister told The Sun: “Sajid is tapping us up. He is very direct, but he’s not offering jobs yet, which wouldn’t be a good look”.
Another senior Tory disclosed: “He told me that Theresa’s Brexit deal is s***, she’ll be forced out when it falls, and he is then going to declare immediately”.
Javid has said he would support a no-deal Brexit and has been backed by leader of the Commons, Andrea Leadsom.
What has Sajid Javid said about the Windrush scandal?
The government was rocked by the scandal of Windrush-generation immigrants who were treated as criminals by the Home Office despite living here legally for decades.
Commonwealth citizens were encouraged to move to Britain from the 1940s to 70s, but many were later unable to prove their right to be here. Some lost jobs, were denied healthcare or were threatened with deportation.
Mr Javid said his family could easily have been caught up in the same situation after moving to the UK half a century ago.
He told The Sunday Telegraph: “I thought that could be my mum, my dad, my uncle …it could be me.”
He added: “I was really concerned when I first started hearing and reading about some of the issues.
“It immediately impacted me. I’m a second-generation migrant. My parents came to this country from Pakistan, just like the Windrush generation.”
His comments heaped more pressure on Ms Rudd, but he also defended the government, urging people to look at the “bigger picture” and his colleagues’ efforts to put things right.
After being made Home Secretary he said his “most urgent task” is sorting out the Windrush mess and his immigration policy will be “fair” and will “treat people with respect and decency”.

Who is Sajid Javid’s brother Bas?
The Sun revealed how Mr Javid grew up on Britain’s most crime-ridden street, which led to his brother Bas Javid joining the police.
Bas is now a chief superintendent in the West Mids Police Force, and his brother drew on the copper’s 25 years of force experience in his first major speech.
Describing his shock at the abuse he saw hurled at his brother as he tried to work, Sajid said: “Over the years, I’ve heard what he has to say about policing.
“I know the tricky situations he’s been in. He’s been hurt more times than I want to know from being assaulted on duty.
“I’ve seen the impact the job has on his family life.”
