A cow was winched to safety after falling down a manhole in the Turkish city of Adana.

The farm animal was discovered by a dog who continued barking outside the hole until people came to the scene.

The entrance to the hole had to be excavated by the emergency team because the cow had managed to fall into a very narrow shaft.

The dog remained faithfully beside the rescue operation and wagged its tail as the men went to work. 

A huge digger carefully hauled out the earth around the hole so that the cow could be drawn out without injury.

One of the rescuers jumped down into the pit with the cow so he could attach a strong harness which was slung under its belly between its front and hind legs. 

The beast - weighing hundreds of kilos - was then winched from its perilous position by a rescue vehicle as crowds watched.

As it was brought to the surface the excited cow struggled in its harness as it tried to put its feet down, while the rescuers held onto the winch.

The animal was lowered to the ground and the firefighters held it fast so that it could not buck.

The loyal dog stayed until the end to see the job through.
