THE UK is being battered by torrential downpours and severe winds today – with up to one inch of rain falling and gusts reaching up to 70mph.
The Met Office have issued two weather warnings in Northern Ireland and the South West of the UK from the early hours of this morning.
The winds and rain come as the UK is just escaping from the clutches of Storm Deirdre after 15 inches of snow, 80mph winds and freezing rain hammered most areas of the country – but Monday’s reprieve will quickly pass.
From today, a brutal weather front will sweep in from Iceland hammering the UK with up to 30mm rain – which could cause localised flooding in areas where rivers are already close to spilling their banks.
Meteorologist Helen Roberts told The Sun Online: “The warning for Northern Ireland is a combined wind and rain warning, valid from 3am until 9am on this morning, during rush hour.
“There’s likely to be strong gusts of wind, particularly around coasts, possibly 65 to 70mph, with some fairly wet weather as well so there’s some particularly miserable conditions for people commuting this morning.”
Ms Roberts continued: “About 15-25mm of rain will fall in Northern Ireland, with up to 30mm in localised areas on already saturated ground so it doesn’t take a lot to have further impact such as surface water on the roads and localised disruption to transport with some very localised flooding.
“In the South West of the UK, a warning for rain is in place valid for much of the day from 5am until 9pm with some strong winds as well up 40 to 50mph, widely around coastal areas and possibly up to 65mph in very exposed areas.”
“In terms of rainfall, we expect 15 to 25mm quite widely, with local rainfall up to 40mm on some south-facing hills such as Dartmoor.
“There’s very saturated ground from the weekend so it’s not going to take a huge amount to exacerbate problems that are already there. It’s going to be localised flooding and possible disruption to transport.”
Across the UK, Ms Roberts says it’s a “wet and windy” day for many today, particularly in the west, but London, East Anglia and parts of the South East will avoid the rain through daylight hours.
“It’ll cloud over during the day but the rain probably won’t arrive until after dark.
“There’ll be above average temperatures today with double figures widely across the country, at 10 to 12 degrees and that should continue throughout the rest of the week.”

But even after today’s downpours, more wind and rain is expected later in the week as powerful coastal gales will pulverise the South and West on Thursday as more rain is forecast for Friday.
The showers will then spread up in a northwesterly direction as the day continues.
And then another barrage of rain will sweep in from the South West again on Friday evening which will last into Saturday, making for a three-day run of stormy and miserable weather.
