TWO women have died in a crash on one of the main routes over the Pennines during freezing weather conditions during Storm Deirdre, police have said.
The women, aged 20 and 22, were in a white Fiat 500 on the A628 Woodhead Pass when the car was in a crash with a blue Mini Cooper, South Yorkshire Police said.
The horror smash happened at 1.30pm on Saturday, as Storm Deirdre began to sweep over the high ground between Greater Manchester and South Yorkshire, bringing freezing temperatures and icy rain.
Police later warned of treacherous conditions across the region.
One of the women in the Fiat 500 who was the driver sadly died in the collision while a further passenger in the car, a woman, suffered serious injuries, cops said.
The man driving the Mini and a woman who was a passenger in the car, suffered minor injuries and they were all taken to hospital for treatment.

A force spokesman said: “A number of witnesses stopped at the scene of the collision, however police are appealing for any further witnesses, particularly those who may have seen the cars prior to the collision or have dash-cam footage.”
The horror smash comes just weeks a driver exclusively told The Sun how he walked away with just a scratch after a wooden stake crashed through his windscreen following a car crash on the Woodhead Pass.
Jordan Middleton-Moore, 24, thanked his “guardian angel” after the 6ft stake came within inches of killing him.
Jordan, of Sheffield, was doing 55mph on the Peak District road when he was hit by a whiteout.
He said: “It was the scariest thing I’ve ever experienced. I should be dead. The post narrowly missed my head.”
