A TRAILBLAZING female politician has been killed in a helicopter crash just ten days after taking office.
Martha Erika Alonso was on board with her husband, ex governor Rafael Moreno Valle Rosas, when it smashed into the ground earlier today.
Their helicopter came down not far from the state capital Puebla, where she had recently been elected Governor.
Martha only took office on December 14.
She was the first female to hold the post and only the seventh female governor in the history of Mexican politics.
Mexico president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, confirmed Alonso and Valle both died in the crash.
Alonso, from the center-right National Action Party (PAN), won a violent, hotly contested election.
An electoral tribunal had to validate the results months after the vote amid accusations of fraud.
“May they rest in peac; (the PAN) is in mourning,” PAN President Marko Cortes said on Twitter.
Moreno was governor of Puebla between 2011 and 2017.
The couple married in 2004.

In 2015, Martha became second in the party’s heirachy behind her husband.
It was not immediately clear what caused the Christmas Eve crash.
The fact the accident occurred just days after Alonso took office triggered speculation of foul play on social media.
