PANIC Saturday’ was mad but ‘Stampede Sunday’ will be the craziest shopping day of the year – as Sunday trading laws trigger a six-hour £1.67million-a-minute blitz.

High streets will be more packed than Saturday despite fewer shops – due to most shops being limited to six hours’ Sunday trading.

Eight million shoppers are due in just six hours on Sunday, compared to 10 million shoppers over 12 hours’ trading Saturday.

One of Britain’s biggest-ever Sunday spending sprees will be sparked by the final Sunday before Christmas falling on the day immediately before Christmas Eve for the first time since 2012, analysts said.

Cheeky shops will stretch Sunday trading hours by opening 30 minutes early for ‘browsing time,’ and closing 30 minutes late for ‘checkout time.’

Sunday’s £800million spree will see shoppers spend £600m in stores, with £200m being spent online, Centre for Retail Research spending trends in a study for VoucherCodes showed, based on interviews with 80 major UK retailers and 1,000 shoppers.

There will only be 20 per cent fewer shoppers Sunday than the day before, analyst Springboard said.

10 million shoppers were due Saturday, the Centre for Retail Research said.

Today, 150,000 shoppers are expected in in just six hours at St David’s, Cardiff, with 130,000 at Birmingham´s Bullring, 100,000 at Manchester’s Trafford Centre and 60,000 at Lakeside, Essex.

And yesterday Bluewater, Kent, was expected to have seen 100,000 shoppers, with 90,000 at Lakeside, Essex.
