GALES and heavy rain will start the day, with freezing rain bringing icy conditions to central and northern England, as well as southern Scotland.

It will be a cold and wet day, with Scotland and North West England seeing snow and Wales having heavy rain. There are amber warnings for snow and ice across the country, which could make for dangerous travel conditions.

THE cloudy and wet weather should begin to clear on Wednesday with sunshine and blustery weather to come.

The west and northwest will see some showers where there is also a chance of hail and thunder.

After some patches of fog clearing on Thursday, it is expected there will be unsettled weather with spells of rain and strong winds across the country. The heaviest rain will remain in the west.

There is a chance of a colder and showery spell developing during Christmas week.
