SAM CURRAN put the megabucks finishing touches to his remarkable year when he became an Indian Premier League dollar millionaire.
Surrey all-rounder Curran, 20, was the highest-paid non-Indian player in the IPL auction yesterday when snapped up by Kings XI.
They agreed to pay Curran £800,000 ($1,011,000) after frantic bidding from other franchises including Royal Challengers Bangalore, captained by India skipper Virat Kohli.
Clearly, the teams weren’t confused by organisers showing a picture of Curran’s brother, Tom, on a screen during the auction in Jaipur!
Curran tweeted: “What a year! Couldn’t be more excited to join the @lionsdenkxip at the @IPL in 2019. Thanks for the continued support from everyone.”
He made his Test debut against Pakistan last summer aged 19 years and 363 days and was named Player of the Series in England’s 4-1 victory over India – despite missing one Test.
Curran continued his fine Test form in the 3-0 triumph in Sri Lanka.
The signs are that Curran will not be part of the England’s World Cup squad next summer which means he should be available for the entire IPL in 2019.
Jonny Bairstow will appear in the tournament for the first time after being bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for £240,000.
But Bairstow will receive little more than half that amount because he has to be home by April 26 to begin preparations for the World Cup. The IPL runs from March 29 to May 19.
Lancashire’s Liam Livingstone (Rajastan Royals £55,000), Harry Gurney of Notts (Kolkata Knight Riders £82,000) and Kent’s Joe Denly (Kolkata Knight Riders £110,000) were also sold.
But the likes of Alex Hales, Chris Woakes, Chris Jordan, Craig Overton, Lewis Gregory, Laurie Evans and Pat Brown attracted no bidders.
Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali are among those retained by their 2018 franchise and therefore had no need to enter the auction.
**Batsman Ben Duckett has been included in the England Lions to tour India early next year – his first international recognition since being fined £1,500 in Australia last winter for pouring a drink over James Anderson.
