THERESA MAY faces a bitter New Year Brexit battle after cross-party MPs last night launched a campaign to kill-off a No Deal.
Labour veterans such as Yvette Cooper joined forces with Tories Oliver Letwin and Nicky Morgan to threaten a Parliamentary mutiny.
They tabled an amendment to the Government’s Finance Bill on January 8 which will effectively block part of it unless the PM’s agreement with Brussels is voted on before Brexit on March 29.
And they said it was just the start of a concerted campaign to hijack parliamentary procedure to modify legislation to try and make a No Deal –where we leave the EU without a trade deal – impossible. They then hope that if PM’s Brexit agreement is voted down, Parliament can then agree on a Plan B – such as a Norway-style exit.
Ms Morgan told The Sun: “This is the start of Parliament making clear through amendments that we are not going to have a No Deal.”
The move came as the Government prepared to redeploy 600 staff from the Department for International Development to work on Brexit.And a Cabinet row over the EU exploded into the open after Amber Rudd said a second referendum was a “plausible” way out of the deadlock.
BRITS CAN STAY AWAY
Thousands of Britons living in Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland have had their rights guaranteed under a new Brexit agreement.
Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay has announced that around 57,000 UK nationals living in European Free Trade Association (Efta) countries and Switzerland will be protected whether or not the UK leaves the EU with a deal.
The agreement will also protect around 14,000 Swiss nationals and 15,000 EU/Efta nationals living in the UK.
In a joint statement, the governments of the UK, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein said: “We are pleased to have reached this agreement. It will protect the rights of our citizens as the UK leaves the EU, and it will provide certainty to businesses.
“We want to put in place new arrangements from the end of the implementation period to protect our historic relationships, including in the area of trade.”
In a joint statement, the UK and Swiss governments said: “This will ensure citizens can continue living their lives broadly as now, and secure the rights Swiss and UK citizens currently enjoy.”
In addition to citizens’ rights, the agreement also covers intellectual property, police and judicial cooperation, data protection and public procurement.
BEST FOR BUSINESS
The UK is the best country in the world to do business despite continued political turbulence and ongoing uncertainty around Brexit, according to Forbes’ 13th annual ranking of the Best Countries for Business.
This measures countries that are most hospitable to capital investment.
The UK ranked first for the second year in a row on the strength of its workforce, innovation and lack of red tape.
Forbes rated 161 nations on 15 different factors: property rights, innovation, taxes, technology, corruption, infrastructure, market size, political risk, quality of life, workforce, freedom (personal, trade and monetary), red tape and investor protection.
The PM’s official spokesman slapped down the Work and Pensions Secretary – saying Mrs May had been “very clear of the dangers” of a new vote.
MOST READ IN BREXIT
But Downing Street was also forced to admonish Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom who yesterday became the second Cabinet Minister to push for a ‘managed No Deal’.
Sources yesterday revealed the government had edited every No Deal technical notice to remove the word “unlikely” from the sentence “event of no deal”.
But the PM referred to No Deal as an “unlikely” prospect in her press conference yesterday.
