A MUM-OF-TWO who stole almost £20k her dementia-suffering nan to fund her lavish lifestyle was bullied in prison, it has been revealed.

Louise Shaw, 35, was pushed around by fellow lags and lost a stone in weight while banged up for four months.

Shaw stole payments of between £100 and £200 over a 10-month period after she was given control over 83-year-old Barbara Fisher’s finances.

The money was supposed to be spent on Mrs Fisher’s care home fees but Shaw instead splashed the cash on a trip away with her husband and their two children aged 11 and 13.

She also paid her electricity bills with her nan’s money.

Today a judge freed thief Shaw after claiming she had learned her lesson, the Manchester Evening News reports.

Shaw, from Oldham in Greater Manchester, claimed she thought her gran had allowed her to take the money to help with day-to-day living

Slamming her behaviour as “despicable” Judge Bernard Lever told Shaw: “Even I am in shock by your appearance. I can see you have had a hard time in custody even though it’s far short of what you could have had.

“I can see myself the change in your appearance, you are a contrite and chastened woman.”

Judge Lever told Shaw she was being freed because her children “did not steal from their grandmother” and did not deserve to be kept “suffering”.

The mum-of-two broke down and wept as she was ordered to complete 300 hours of unpaid work and was told the rest of her 18-month sentence would be suspended.

In total Shaw stole £19,431 after she took control of her gran’s finances when she was formally diagnosed with dementia in early 2016.

Since her arrest Shaw has been suspended from her job at a medical surgery and has been working as an assistant at a Sainsbury’s supermarket

She left Mrs Fisher’s care home fees up to £30,000 in arrears. The bill has since been paid in full.

Shaw was rumbled when her aunt took over as the second power of attorney in April 2017 and spotted the payments.

During her trial, Charlotte Crangle, prosecuting, said: “There were all kinds of payments, including some to restaurants and beauty shops, as well as other items. There was also one family holiday paid for, which the whole family went to.”

Shaw, from Oldham in Greater Manchester, claimed she thought her gran had allowed her to take the money to help with day-to-day living.

At Minshull Street Crown Court, Manchester, she admitted a charge of fraud by abuse of position between May 2016 and March 2017.

In an unusual move, a judge imposed a partially suspended 18-month sentence in which she will be jailed until December 21 before being brought back to court to see if she will spend Christmas behind bars.

Since her arrest Shaw has been suspended from her job at a medical surgery and has been working as an assistant at a Sainsbury’s store.

The children will be cared for by their father while she is in jail.

Sentencing Shaw, Judge Lever said: “Sitting as a judge for 27-and-a-half years, there has been a difference in regards to the changing of sentencing options – but there used to be an option for partially suspended sentences.

“I believe the solution to this case is this lady should spend some time behind bars because what she did was despicable.

“As her grandmother was getting confused, she was in the position to look after her and she was the one in position of authority.

”She had access to her personal accounts. Therefore I have to decided to send her to custody straight away.

“I hope this will act as a cathartic effect when she is released to be with her family. The clanging of the prison gates will serve as punishment enough and it is only because of her children and their Christmas that I make the time spent in custody so short.”
