A MIDWIFE has been banned from working in hospitals until she changes her dyed red hair.

Donna Crichton, 53, has had the “pillar box red” colour for 14 years while working for the NHS.

In June, she was told it was “too bright” and breached uniform rules.

She was sent home and told not to return to Grantham and Lincoln County Hospitals, Lincs, until it was sorted.

Donna, a midwife of 30 years, refused to change and is involved in grievance proceedings against the hospitals’ trust.

She said: “I felt completely annihilated.

“I felt disrespected and humiliated.

“No member of the public or patient has ever had a negative comment about my hair.”

The hospital trust’s uniform policy states: “Where staff have public facing roles (this includes patients, relatives, stakeholder and members of the general public), hair colour should reflect the trust’s requirement for professionalism by the member of staff.”

The Royal College of Nursing and Midwifery said the trust, which has faced serious problems with recruitment and standards of care, was being distracted by trivial matters.
