THE paint peeled off the walls when the Special One launched an expletive-ridden rant about his trophy record in the company of friends last week.
He’s won a few down the years, he will have you know.
Jose has far more to show for his career than Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp and Mauricio Pochettino, the coach earmarked for his job at Old Trafford.
The sport’s ultimate trophy-hunter is miffed because he wants to be respected and revered for his achievements.
Jose’s 25 honours (let’s include the Super Cup and Community Shield wins to keep him sweet) is a crutch for him to lean on now.
It won’t help him much when he takes this pedestrian Manchester United side to Anfield to face Klopp’s high-flying Liverpool side on Sunday.
The country has fallen for Klopp, in thrall with the idea of this jolly giant winning his first piece of silverware in English football.
Now into his fourth year at Anfield, they look like they are up for it.
Liverpool, a jaw-dropping 16 points ahead of the Special One’s struggling side in the Premier League, have had quite a week.
To beat Bournemouth so emphatically to go top of the pile after Manchester City were unseated by Chelsea and then to qualify for the second phase of the Champions League is stirring emotions on Merseyside.
MORE MAN UNITED STORIES
Klopp has pedigree, edging out Bayern Munich with successive Bundesliga triumphs when he was in charge of Borussia Dortmund in 2011 and 2012.
He has got to grips with English football, building a compelling and formidable attacking team under his leadership.
The next step for Liverpool is to win something big.
Three runners-up medals — League Cup, Europa League and Champions League — show signs of progress when a team is under construction.
It is beyond that now, with the Reds leading from the front ahead of this seismic clash against their arch-rivals.
In Mo Salah, who had an unsuccessful spell working with the Special One at Chelsea, they boast one of the best attacking players in world football.
He is making the game look easy, with those effortless, slaloming runs causing havoc when he scored a hat-trick in the 4-0 win last Saturday.
Against Napoli in midweek, when Liverpool needed a match winner, he scored their dreamy 34th-minute goal to take them through.
At the other end they finally have a goalkeeper, with the presence of Brazil star Alisson adding stability to their defence.
In front of him, Virgil van Dijk is a throwback to Bill Shankly’s famous invitation to journalists reporting on the arrival of Ron Yeats in 1961.
“Go on, walk around him, he’s a colossus”.
Van Dijk is also one of only five players in this Liverpool side to have won a league title.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
The Dutchman did it with Celtic in 2014 and 2015 before he made the move south to join Southampton.
Giorginio Wijnaldum (PSV), James Milner (Manchester City), Sadio Mane (RB Salzburg) and Salah (Swiss Super League) are the others.
Nice prizes, but winning the Premier League with Liverpool is the target for this talented bunch.
The visit of United is always a hum-dinger, but the 201st meeting between these two clubs has taken on added significance.
Liverpool’s lead over United is so big, peering down on a club in sixth place with only 26 points to their 42.
It was supposed to be the other way round.
When Mourinho finally got his hands on the United job, he was meant to bring in the sport’s major honours.
This is his third year at the helm and it is impossible to think they can win the Premier League this season.
That is Liverpool’s job now, to take this historic game by the scruff of the neck and then move on to more pressing matters at the top of the table.
No matter how many times Klopp dodges it, Liverpool are right in the thick of a title race.
If they beat United, the countdown can begin.
GLENN-D OF AN ERA
MARTIN GLENN’S legacy at the FA is his failed attempt to flog Wembley to Shahid Khan.
The outgoing chief exec put his heart and soul into the project, promising 3G pitches for every football-crazy kid in the country when Khan made his initial approach.
When he could not convince the FA council to sell the national stadium, there was only one outcome.
SAY TAARA TO CAREER
ADEL TAARABT earns £65,000 a week at Benfica and will never kick another ball for the first team.
This troubled, misguided soul is an outstanding talent, tossing it all away because he can never focus on his football for long enough.
Benfica signed the attacker from QPR in 2015, handing him a five-year contract worth more than £3million-a-year.
He trains with the B team now, down among the dead men after being demoted by Benfica.
Taarabt has been told he has no chance of playing first-team football again.
With a talent like that, it is such a waste.
GROUNDS FOR DISMISSAL
THE astronomical cost of Spurs’ new stadium stopped Mauricio Pochettino making a signing last summer.
But knockout football in the Champions League has helped the club’s finances.
Although chairman Daniel Levy is right up against it, he will release a few quid in January for his coach to make at least one signing during the transfer window.
SLEEVE IT OUT, LADS
IT feels like this is turning into a bit of a crusade, but Arsenal’s tradition of matching the captain’s choice of shirt sleeves has fallen by the wayside.
Unai Emery probably does not even realise that Alex Iwobi, Hector Bellerin, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi are persistently flouting a tradition by wearing long-sleeved baselayers.
Even so, someone at this institution should have a word.

Hayden says: “I don’t have a model’s body, but I’m not one of those crazy girls who thinks that they’re fat. I’m OK with what I have.”
