IT’S too simple to say Jose Mourinho’s tactics were wrong.
He was let down in the transfer market — and that’s where the problems lay.
Mourinho was given a new contract at the start of the year and his biggest request was a new centre-back.
United had to back him and they didn’t. He wanted to bring in Toby Alderweireld from Tottenham, but the club would not pay the fee.
So yes, the football Manchester United played this season under Mourinho wasn’t great — but some of what Jose did is understandable.
His limitations in defence meant he couldn’t be as expansive as he would have liked.
Partnerships on the pitch should be opposites.
In defence, one centre-back should be a ball player and one should be a ball winner.
United’s defenders are far too similar.
They do not have a John Stones or an Aymeric Laporte, an Alderweireld or a Virgil van Dijk, who are all very good in possession and have the ability to bring the ball forward.

When opposing teams played a 4-5-1 and sat deep, especially if United went behind early — a regular occurrence this season — Jose’s side found it very difficult.
Mourinho would have wanted to play an attacking 4-3-3.
In his head, the likes of Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera or Marouane Fellaini would sit deep and allow Paul Pogba to have freedom further up the pitch.
Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia would be storming forward as attacking-minded full-backs.
A front three of, say, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Romelu Lukaku would be close together and constantly interchanging.
But to do this he needed a centre-back with the ability to beat the first line of the press and then look to move forward with the ball.
A domino effect then occurs. The opposition midfield is forced to move out and become staggered.
Then the opposition defence is forced to step into that space, which in turn creates gaps behind them.
But United don’t have that player. And as a result Mourinho was more reserved in his tactics.
Lukaku would be left isolated, Pogba would drop deeper and the full-backs would be running back towards their own goal.
A defensive element was instilled into creative and talented players.
Of course, there is the argument Mourinho could have been braver and trusted the players he had, giving them more of a licence to play.
But it’s not as simple as that. It is not as if United simply didn’t attack under Mourinho.
They have scored just two fewer goals than Tottenham in the Premier League this season — and Mauricio Pochettino’s men are a brilliant side to watch and are having a great campaign.
But Spurs have the ability to attack because there is balance behind them.
United have so far conceded 13 more than Pochettino’s Spurs side.
Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof all tried to be the defender Mourinho wanted.
Even Scott McTominay and Herrera were tried out in the back line.
It was much more difficult for Jose to get his United side playing the way he truly wanted without the defender he craved.
