New photo Incredible pics reveal the highs and lows of the US military’s action-packed year

A SNAKE slithers across a sniper’s rifle barrel in a hold-your-breath moment – part of an impressive photo gallery featuring the US military in action this year.

In another jaw-dropping image, a soldier calmly salutes mid-air while leaping from a plane.

Both are part of a compelling collection of snaps taken around the globe by Army photojournalists, who have worked alongside the US military throughout 2018.

They highlight a wide range of training exercises, including being engulfed in flames during “fire phobia” drills in Kosovo.

And as one sweet picture shows, some family members couldn’t wait to greet nearly 400 paratroopers after nine months’ deployment to Afghanistan – as can be seen in the wide grin of a happy soldier.

But it’s not all about guns and fighter planes as, away from manoeuvres, there was a battle of sorts on the field, where the Army lifted the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy after defeating the Navy for the third year in a row.
