KNIFE attacks on youngsters have been dramatically reduced thanks to increased stop and searches and get-tough measures, Britain’s top cop said yesterday.
Knife attacks on under-25’s went down 31 per cent during the three months between September and the end of November, with 176 fewer stabbing victims compared to the same period last year.
Met Police chief Cressida Dick said there was ‘absolutely’ a link between the drop in knife crime and rise in stop-and-searches[/caption]
The marked reduction follows an increase in stop and searches in the capital this year and the beefing up of the Met’s Violent Crime Taskforce.
Their numbers doubled to 250 in September this year, with 122 “Black Rats” from traffic policing being recruited to the squad.
Since then, more than 1,700 stop and searches have been carried out by the task force, with almost a fifth leading to arrests for offences like carrying offensive weapons and drugs.
The annual figure for knife crime in London dropped 13 per cent with 287 fewer incidents[/caption]

Nearly one third of stop and searches led to suspected contraband and weapons being discovered. Met chief Ms Dick said there was “absolutely” a link between the drop in knife crime and rise in stop and searches.
She added : “With knife crime, stop and search in the right place is very important in my view,” adding that increased use of the tactic has had a “big impact.”
The commissioner hailed the success of the task force, which has been operating in problem areas, and also praised the Met’s gang-busting Operation Trident unit, who have targeted violent criminals.
Ms Dick said : “We are focusing on people causing the most harm and who are the most violent.”
