New photo Gunman had violent past and criminal record had been tagged 'threat to the state'

The man suspected of last night's atrocity which left three dead and 12 injured under the lights of Strasbourg's Christmas market is a convicted criminal who had been identified as a threat to the French state by the security services.

Police sources named himearly today as Cherif Chekatt, a 29-year-old native of the city, born on February 4, 1989.

They say he has a lengthy criminal record for robberies and the Interior Minister described him last night as a 'common criminal'.

According to a source close to the investigation, he was sentenced to two years in prison in 2011 for a knife attack on a 16-year-old.

Police knocked at his door only yesterday morning to arrest him in connection with a violent robbery.

They were following up a lead connected to his past criminal behaviour, rather than acting on any intelligence that he planned to commit mass murder. He was not at home, but investigators found a grenade among his belongings.

Christophe Castaner, France's Interior Minister, said that after Tuesday morning's failed raid the suspect 'went on the run'.

But beyond his criminal record for violence and theft, Chekatt was a known threat to national security.

As information tumbled out from multiple sources in the immediate aftermath of last night's attack, French authorities admitted the armed man on the run had long been tagged by the security services (the Direction Générale de la Sécurité Intérieure or DGSI) as fiche S.

Those designated fiche S are considered the highest level threat to the French state - the S stands for Sûreté de l'État ('state security') - and in 2015 the Prime Minister said 10,500 fiche S individuals were considered a risk on the grounds of radicalisation.

Yesterday French officials confirmed he was on the list for reasons connected with radicalisation.

The gunman's motives remain a mystery. There are no eye-witness accounts of what - if anything - was shouted during the crime, and it is not known whether he had any links to organised terror groups.

Police said they were investigating a possible motive of terrorism for the shooting, and a special anti-terrorism prosecutor based in Paris is now involved in the investigation.

A spokesman for Paris prosecutors said: 'An investigation has been opened for assassinations and attempted assassinations in connection with a terrorist enterprise, and for criminal conspiracy.'

The spokesman said online groups linked to Islamic State were 'celebrating the attacks', but no terrorist group had yet claimed responsibility.

At around 11pm on Tuesday the gunman was believed to have been cornered by French police in an apartment in the Neudorf area of the city.

But later the Mayor of Strasbourg said the suspect has evaded capture having hijacked a taxi at gunpoint.
