New photo Fortnite, slime and the 'In My Feelings Challenge': Instagram reveals the top trends of 2018

If you were on Instagram at all this year, chances are you may have encountered some videos about soap, a bizarre phenomenon called the Fortnite dance or a certain Korean pop band.

These were just some of the most of the most popular trends on the Facebook-owned social media app throughout 2018, according to Instagram, which released its 2018 Year in Review on Thursday.

The list breaks down the top face filters, fandoms, hashtags, dance challenges, GIFs and other trends during the past year.

INSTAGRAM'S TOP TRENDS OF 2018

  • Most-used face filter: Heart eyes

  • Most-used GIF in Instagram Stories: Heart Love sticker

  • Happiest geo-tagged location in the world: Disneyland Tokyo

  • Top niche community: ASMR

  • Highest growth hashtag: Fortnite

  • Top fandom: BTS

  • Top dance movement: #inmyfeelingschallenge

  • Top advocacy hashtags: #metoo, #timesup, #marchforourlives

In 2018, slime still reigned supreme on the app as ASMR videos became the top niche community on Instagram.

Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response (ASMR) videos tend to have a soothing effect on viewers, prompting their brains to release feel-good hormones and neurotransmitters, such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.

They often trigger a tingling sensation on the skin, simulating what might otherwise feel like 'pins and needles.'

These kinds of videos have taken Instagram and other social media platforms by storm in the past few years and 2018 was no different, with slime popping, soap cutting and makeup shaving among the most-popular videos in the ASMR community, Instagram said.

More than five million videos were tagged with #ASMR on Instagram this year.

When people weren't watching ASMR videos, many of them were uploading videos to compete in the #inmyfeelingschallenge.

Some 678,000 posts were uploaded to Instagram tagged with #inmyfeelingschallenge, as the dance craze captured the attention of regular users and celebrities alike, with Will Smith, DJ Khaled all uploading their own version of the viral video.

The dance takes its name from Drake's R&B hit of the same title and started when comedian Shiggy filmed himself dancing to the track on the side of the road.

It quickly took off after NFL player Odell Beckham filmed himself doing the dance while exiting a vehicle, leading to others recording their own dangerous versions from the perspective of someone driving an actual moving car.

The other trend that seems to have dominated every corner of the internet is Fortnite.

On Instagram it was no different, where #fortnite became the highest growth hashtag, racking up an astounding 14.8 million posts tagged with the name of the wildly popular battle royale game.

Fortnite has attracted some 200 million players to its platform in the last six months, but further cemented its viral status when users began recording themselves recreating the popular in-game emotes, such as the 'Swipe It' emote, which takes after the Milly Rock dance.

But it wasn't the only fandom that drove users crazy on Instagram.

K-pop boy band BTS, or the Bangtan Boys, became the top fandom community on Instagram this year, with nearly 70 million posts uploaded including #BTS and #BTSarmy being another popular hashtag.

The K-pop superstars have become a global sensation, recently landing a collaboration with Nicki Minaj and appearances on many of the top U.S. late-night talk shows.

Earlier this year, they even set a Guinness World Record for Twitter engagement.

Aside from fandoms, Instagram was also apparently full of a lot of love.
